ABINGDON –– Two local golfers finished among the top three places in the 15-18 age group as the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour wrapped up its 2010 season with a two-day championship July 26-27 at Glenrochie Country Club.

After waiting out a two-hour rain delay, Galax High School rising senior Brock Cox backed up a first-day, 1-over-par 73 with a 2-over 74 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 147, edging a pair of runners-up by three shots. Taking home one of the runner-up spots was Kris Goad of Hillsville. Goad shaved a full six strokes off of his first-day score of 78 and turned in an even-par 72 on Tuesday to tie with Brandon White of Richlands for second place.

Aaron Deel, J.J. McPherson and Chris Scott tied for fourth at 157, followed by Galax’s Matthew Downey (160), Jimmy Bower (162), Barrett Cunningham (165) and Carter Brookman (166) in the top 10.

Rounding out the top 15 were Dustin Thompson of Galax, Andrew Day, Karson Terry, Jordan Lovelace and Grayson County’s Tyler Rutherford.

Andrew Simonsen of Johnson City, Tenn., shot a 77 to post a two-day total of 156 and win the 14-15 age group by a single stroke over Conrad Thacker of Abingdon, who closed with a 76. Zachary Luttrell of Pounding Mill was third with a 162.

Kory Wilson of Pearisburg maintained his first-round lead and won the 12-13 age group with a 36-hole total of 163. Dylan Sawyers of Richlands finished second with a 170 and Taylor Trail of Marion was third at 171.

In the 10-12 age group, Andrew Spiegler of Abingdon shot a 9-hole 40 on both days to win the championship over Joseph Clark of Pearisburg. Clark was two shots back of Spiegler and one stroke better than the third-place effort of Tanner Adams of Abingdon.

Based on points accumulated throughout the season, White was named the player of the year in the 16-18 age group. Simonsen earned the honor in the 14-15 division, as did Wilson in the 12-13 age group and Clark in the 10-12 age group.
