Staff Report

In addition to flavorful food, the 13th Annual Smoke on the Mountain Virginia State BBQ Championship this weekend will offer a taste of great music.

The event will be held July 21-22 in downtown Galax, hosted by the City of Galax and the Twin County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Headliners this year include returning favorites The Tams playing Motown and classic rock on Friday night from 8:30 p.m. and into the night; and the Tangent Band, playing “all-era” rock and roll from 8 p.m.-midnight on Saturday.

During the event, there will be live bluegrass music in front of Barr’s Fiddle Shop on South Main Street from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. both days; a wine and beverage garden from noon-midnight in the music stage area next to the food court at the Galax Farmers’ Market (no coolers allowed); DJ Steve playing music both days, 3-6 p.m.; and live band 14 Karat Gold on Friday from 7-8:15 p.m.

There will also be a carnival in the old Carter Bank & Trust lot and old Wachovia bank parking lot at the corner of Main and Center streets.

The event is Virginia’s official barbecue cookoff, and visitors can sample entries from professional teams from all over the country.

The People’s Choice Award will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday; for a $5 donation, the public can sample 1-ounce tastings of participating competitors and vote on their favorites. The People’s Choice tent will be located at the intersection of Main and Center streets.

The awards ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

There will be $12,000 total in cash prizes, as well as uniquely musical trophies.

As always, the Memphis grand prize winner will receive a specially-made banjo and get a slot in next year’s “Memphis in May” world championship, while the Kansas City grand prize winner will receive a specially-made acoustic guitar and a slot in next year’s American Royale competition in Kansas City.
