Citizens encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts

Staff Report

This past weekend’s flooding in Galax and the potential effects of Hurricane Florence demonstrate the importance of citizens being able to receive emergency alerts.

Jolena Young, director of Twin County 911, is encouraging local residents to sign up for the Nixle and Everbridge emergency notification services, which send text messages about public safety matters.

“During an emergency, county and city officials use emergency notification services such as Nixle to send important messages,” Young said. “If you are not registered, go to Carroll County, Grayson County, or Galax City websites and look for the link to subscribe to Everbridge or Nixle.”

Everbridge will ask for your address, which enables public officials to send geographically targeted messages — to a specific street or area, for example. “The information is used for public safety use only,” Young said.

You can also sign up for anonymous Nixle messaging by texting your zip code to 888777.
