Carroll charity celebrates 20 years

Staff Report

HILLSVILLE — This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Carroll Christmas Fund, a community effort that makes the holiday season brighter for the less fortunate.

When the Carroll Christmas Fund began in 1997, volunteers delivered 64 food boxes, said DeAnn Smith of Dawn Auction Company in Hillsville, one of the event’s sponsors. “Since then, this project has been extremely blessed and last year we delivered food boxes to 565 families and toys to over 450 children.”

The charity is completely volunteer, so every dollar donated goes directly into purchasing food or toys for these local families.

“Donations can consist of money; new and unopened toys; and canned, non-perishable food items,” Smith said.

Food will need to be collected prior to Dec. 14 and toys need to be collected prior to Dec. 12.

Donations can be mailed to Carroll Christmas Fund, 235 West Stuart Drive, Hillsville, VA 24343; or dropped off at Dawn Auction’s office in Hillsville.

Volunteers are needed to pack boxes and deliver them. Boxing night is Dec. 14 at Virginia Produce, 227 Industrial Park Drive in Hillsville, starting at 6 p.m. Deliveries start out at Virginia Produce on Dec. 16 at 8 a.m.

“Anyone and everyone who wants to help is welcome to both events,” Smith said.
