Carroll County Fair opens Aug. 23

HILLSVILLE — The annual Carroll County Fair starts today, Wednesday, at the Southwest Virginia Farmers’ Market, off Interstate 77’s Exit 14 in Hillsville, and runs through Aug. 27.

It has been named the “Best Small Fair in Virginia” by the Virginia Association of Fairs.

The fair offers unlimited carnival rides with paid gate admission. Admission this year is $5 for ages 13 and older, $3 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and younger.

New this year are a General Lee exhibition car (from “Dukes of Hazzard”) on Sunday from noon-2 p.m.; Hillbilly Pig Races on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday; Poultry Show costume and showmanship contests; school garden; and more 4-H family fun games.

Organizers highlight Carroll County’s ongoing agricultural community by holding the fair at the Southwest Virginia Farmers’ Market, at 497 Farmers Market Drive in Hillsville.

Hours are 5-10 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday; 5-11 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday (carnival noon-11 p.m.); and noon-6 p.m. Sunday (carnival 1-6 p.m.).

A partial schedule includes:

• Wednesday: Music Jam Session, Youth Dairy Show, Hillbilly Pig Races, Youth Beef Cattle Show

• Thursday: Stockman’s Contest, Poultry Show, Rabbit Show, Miss Carroll County Pageant, Hillbilly Pig Races

• Friday: Youth Meat and Dairy Goat Show, Recipe Contest, Storytelling, Music with the Ethan Ayers Band, Lawnmower Race

• Saturday: Drug Dog Demonstration, Youth Market Lamb Show, Forestry Events, Hillbilly Pig Races, Local Authors, Pet Show, Storytelling, Horse Pull, Music Groups featuring Josh Burton

• Sunday: Coon Dog Bench & Treeing Contest, Horse Show, All-Star Wrestling
