The Cavaliers got two touchdowns from Moreno, Bowman and opened SWD play on a high note.

TAZEWELL — With a minute gone in the opening quarter, Tazewell was  already a touchdown ahead. With less than a minute to go in the game, Carroll County had rebounded for a big Southwest District victory.

The Cavaliers (2-2) rolled up 387 yards rushing and cruised to a 50-13  win over the battling Bulldogs (0-4) as the SWD season opened. Ulises Moreno paced CCHS with 112 yards rushing and two scores including an 80-yard scamper in the first two minutes.

Tazewell used the “M & M” combination for a pair of dramatic defensive touchdowns.

Mikal Moore plucked a bobbled Carroll football out of midair and raced 39 yards untouched for a touchdown. Andrew Murray booted the extra point to push THS ahead 7-0 at the 11:05 mark of the opening stanza.

Moreno broke loose two plays later, going 80 yards for the touchdown on the right side in front of the Cavalier stands. He then tossed a two-point conversion to Jordan Lamb. After six plays, two touchdowns were on the board. Carroll County led 8-7 with 10:05 on the first quarter clock and never trailed again.

Logan Hodges raced 47 yards for the Carroll touchdown to cap a 6-play, 68-yard drive as Moreno’s PAT upped the tally to 15-7. Cavalier quarterback Blake Bowman scampered 35 yards for the next six pointer and Carroll led 22-7 at halftime.

Moreno’s second touchdown came with 7:31 left in the third stanza, a 9-yard run for the second of three Cavalier TDs in the period. Jacob Mollet roared in for a 40-yard score to ignite Carroll’s second-half surge. Lamb’s interception on the Tazewell 42 on the next series set up Bowman’s second touchdown on a first and-goal from the Bulldog 5-yard stripe. Moreno kicked yet another PAT as the Cavaliers increased the  advantage to 43-7 with 1:59 left in the third quarter.

Tazewell’s Shaquille McDonald capped another outstanding defensive effort when he stripped the ball from a Cavalier runner and motored all alone into the end zone with an “honor guard” of THS players trailing in  his wake. McDonald carried the ball 34 yards for the score. A bad snap halted the kick try and Tazewell trailed 43-13 with 7:54 to play.

Brady Guy’s 12-yard touchdown with 3:43 remaining capped the final drive of the evening and Moreno kicked the 50th point.

Mikey Wright, Carter Rasnick, steady Kyle Sheets, Moore, and Nick Goad were among the better Bulldog defenders and Jalen Jordan recovered a fumble for Tazewell.

Bowman completed four passes for 64 yards (32 to Logan Hodges and 32 to Mollet) while Tazewell’s Cody McCann totaled 45 yards through the air on four completions. John Walker (16 yards), Moore (15 yards) and Jalen Jordan (3 catches for 15 yards) led the way. Moore carried 10 times for

46 yards for the Bulldogs.

Bowman had 94 yards on nine carries and two scores.
