Blue Devils knock off Bland County

Grayson’s boys picked up their second win of the season, 66-59.

INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County built a 15-point halftime lead and withstood a second-half charge by Bland County to notch its second win of the season, taking a 66-59 victory Wednesday in a Mountain Empire District game.

The Blue Devils (2-14) jumped on the Bears (3-12) early, taking a five-point lead into the second quarter and expanding it to 36-21 by halftime.

Bland County closed to within six points by the start of the fourth period before Grayson held on for the win.

Bailey Hawkins sank three 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead the Blue Devils, who got 12 points from Garrett Moore.

Jacob Cross nearly matched Bailey point-for-point and finished with 24 for Bland County. Jake Watters added 16 points for the Bears.

Graham 68, Galax 40: The G-Men closed out the first quarter with an 18-3 run and gradually pulled away from there, rolling past the Maroon Tide in a Mountain Empire District game Wednesday in Galax.

Roman Workman scored eight of his game-high 12 points in the first quarter for Graham (10-2), which led 20-5 after eight minutes and 35-14 at halftime. Chandler Cooper, who finished with 11 points, also scored eight in the first period for the G-Men.

Stew Merdian led Galax with 11 points and DeAngelo Ravenell scored 10 for the Maroon Tide (3-10).

Cave Spring 90, Carroll County 41: The Cavaliers fell into a 24-point hole in the first quarter Tuesday and never recovered, dropping a River Ridge District game to the Knights in Roanoke.

Cave Spring (13-4, 8-1), which hit 10 3-pointers for the game, bolted to a 28-4 lead in the first eight minutes and never looked back.

Brody Hicks canned five treys for Cave Spring and led four Knights in double figures with 17 points. Baker Haviland scored 14 points, followed by Brad Kinder (11) and Jared Steele (10).

Jordan Combs led Carroll County (4-11, 0-8) with 15 points and Caden Hodges scored 10.

Fort Chiswell 48, Galax 35: The Pioneers limited the Maroon Tide to 11 first-half points and took a Mountain Empire District win Tuesday in Max Meadows.

Tanner Bailey and Bryson Booher scored 13 points each for Fort Chiswell (12-4), which led 22-11 at halftime.

Cameron Brown, Jacob Brown and Stew Merdian scored eight points apiece for Galax.

Grayson County 41, Bland County 33: The Blue Devils got 14 points from both Kassie Hawks and Emily Hart and made an eight-point halftime lead hold up in an MED win Tuesday in Independence.

Hawks also grabbed 11 rebounds and rejected five shots for Grayson County (8-6).

Malee Lambert hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points to lead Bland County (4-13).

Fort Chiswell 79, Galax 39: The Pioneers outscored the Maroon Tide 24-2 in the second quarter to take command, rolling to an MED win Wednesday in Max Meadows.

Fort Chiswell (14-1) took a 22-13 lead into the second quarter and went to the half with a comfortable 46-15 lead.

Savannah Dunford dropped in 18 points to lead four scorers in double figures for the Pioneers, who had five players combine for seven 3-pointers. Emily Hight and Sadie Smith added 13 points apiece and Gracie Robinson contributed 11 points.

Kylee Hill scored 10 points to lead Galax (5-10).
