Cavs battle Bengals before falling 17-14

HILLSVILLE –– Zach Atwood’s 26-yard field goal as time expired spoiled a gutsy Carroll County effort and lifted Bassett to a 17-14 nondistrict win over the Cavaliers in the season opener for both teams Friday at Tommy Thompson Field.

Carroll County had knotted the score at 14-14 on Logan Hodges’ 1-yard run and Ulises Moreno’s PAT with 1:59 remaining.

Bassett was given good field position with no time leaving the clock when the ensuing kickoff squibbed out of bounds. Shaq Finney broke three tackles to turn a catch on a 5-yard out pattern into a 30-yard gain, and he later added a 9-yard run to the Cavalier 10. Following a 1-yard Daniel Martin run, Atwood drilled the game winner.

Finney nabbed a 25-yard touchdown pass from Dashaun Valentine for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but Carroll County answered late in the half on a 4-yard scoring run by Hodges.

Finney gave the Bengals a 14-7 lead with a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Carroll County held Bassett to 205 yards of total offense, led by Finney with 66 receiving yards and 28 rushing yards. Valentine carried 15 times for 59 yards for the Bengals.

The Cavaliers got 59 yards on the ground from Moreno and 40 yards on five carries by Ryne Ayers.

Carroll County will host its second Piedmont District opponent in as many weeks Friday when the Cavs welcome Patrick County.
