  • Grayson boys withstand Elkin...

SPARTA, N.C. –– Those 28-point second-half leads sure do come in handy at times.

Grayson County built a massive lead midway through the third quarter and then sweated it out as Elkin pulled to within three points with possession of the ball before the Blue Devils hung on for a 65-62 nondistrict win Monday in the Cross-Border Shootout at Alleghany High School.

  • Blue Devil girls fall to Elkin

SPARTA, N.C. –– After holding Elkin to just two points in the first quarter, Grayson County managed just two points itself in the second period, falling to the Elks 38-32 in a nondistrict game Monday at Alleghany High School.

“We really did play hard,” Grayson County coach Tiny Funk said. “We gave ourselves a chance. They hit a lot of big shots, and we didn’t hit a lot of shots at all. We got the ball where we wanted it most of the night, we just couldn’t get them to fall.”

  • Bland County drops Cavaliers for...

MAX MEADOWS – It may not have been the championship game, but both teams played hard in the seventh-place matchup of the Wythe County BB&T Tournament Monday at Fort Chiswell High School.

Both Carroll and Bland Counties came into the match-up with an 0-2 record in the tournament with Carroll falling to Floyd on Friday night and host Fort Chiswell on Saturday. Bland on the other hand, lost to George Wythe Friday and PH-Glade Spring on Saturday.

  • Maroon Tide boys top Alleghany

SPARTA, N.C. –– Galax started each half with a bang and dropped host Alleghany 54-41 Monday in the Cross-Border Shootout.

The Maroon Tide (8-1) outscored the Trojans a combined 36-13 in the first and third periods and led by 22 points late in the game before Alleghany made a late push.

Scott Alouf led the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Galax, which played Elkin Tuesday in the second day of the event. Cameron Frazier contributed 13 points and five assists, while Kyle Adams pulled down 10 rebounds to go with eight points.

  • Scorching second half lifts...

SPARTA, N.C. –– Grayson County made it 4-for-4 for the Virginia boys, knocking off host Alleghany 65-53 in the Cross Border Shootout Tuesday night.

The Blue Devils and Galax both went 2-0 in the event. Grayson County shot nearly 80 percent from the floor in the second half, hitting 19 of 24 attempts to pull away from a 22-21 halftime lead.

Eric Harvey led Grayson County with 19 points and Tyler Rutherford scored 13 of his 16 after halftime.

  • Hounds race past Blue Devils

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. –– In times when it seems everything good or bad seems to be somehow related to a sagging economy, it’s fitting to look at Grayson County in economic terms: Poor first-quarter earnings have caused long-term woes for the Blue Devils.

North Surry raced out to an 18-2 lead after the first period and rolled to a 58-19 win in a nondistrict game Tuesday afternoon at Ron King Gymnasium.

  • Floyd County, Marion take wins...

FLOYD –– Floyd County rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit with a big third quarter and defeated Grayson County 67-53 in a nondistrict boys’ game Monday night.

The Blue Devils (4-3) had defeated the Buffaloes (4-1) by 14 points two weeks ago and led 33-25 at intermission, but Floyd County outscored Grayson County 22-5 in the third quarter and never trailed again in claiming a 14-point win.

Tucker Crawford and Cole Peters each scored 17 points to lead the Buffaloes, who have not lost since dropping their season opener to Grayson.

  • Galax bombs Carroll 55-42

Galax knocked down nine 3-pointers and clamped down defensively for the first two periods, taking a 55-42 nondistrict win over Carroll County.

Outsized at nearly every position, the Cavaliers (1-6) planned on making the Maroon Tide (6-1) win it from long range. Scott Alouf and Cameron Frazier obliged, combining for eight of Galax’s treys, including five from Alouf.

  • Defending state champs knock off...

HILLSVILLE – Floyd County’s defense allowed only six points in the opening eight minutes of the game Monday night en route to an 80-67 non-district win over Carroll County.

The Cavaliers (3-2) managed to keep the game close for the first 3:49 when Kayla Goins made a beautiful pass to Audrey Dickens, who drove to the lane and tied the score at 6-6 with 4:11 to play in the first quarter.

From there things got ugly quickly as the Buffaloes (9-1) blanked the Cavaliers for the remainder of the quarter during a 14-0 run.
