  • Galax, Carroll National advance...

    Galax and Carroll County National were the last two teams standing after four days of the Dixie District 1 O-Zone baseball tournament at Mountain View Park.

    Galax entered Tuesday’s round the lone unbeaten in the original field of eight teams of 11- and 12-year-olds, while Carroll National advanced to Tuesday with one loss, needing to defeat Galax twice to win the district.

  • Galax defends home turf

     Galax completed a perfect 5-0 run through the area’s best 12-year-old baseball teams and claimed the championship in the Dixie Boys’ District 1 O-Zone tournament Tuesday at Mountain View Park.

    Galax defeated Carroll County National 12-2 in four innings to capture the title. Both teams will advance to the Dixie state tournament, beginning July 13 in Amherst.

  • Minors tourney down to two

     After 13 games, Galax and Carroll County American stood as the last remaining teams in the Dixie Boys District 1 Minors baseball tournament at Mountain View Park.

    Galax survived a pair of extra-inning scrapes to reach the final pairing while Carroll American battled its way back through the bottom bracket after losing its second game of the event.

    Scoot, Chinquapin and Booger. Bubba, Grasshopper and Train. The nicknames were almost as good as the baseball. And for a bunch of kids, some of whom still count their age in the single digits, the baseball was pretty darn good.

    Galax came out on top in competitive outings against two Carroll County teams on the final two days of play to win the Dixie Youth District 1 Minors tournament Tuesday at Mountain View Park. The host team will now hit the road, advancing to the state tournament for 9- and 10-year-olds in South Hill beginning July 20.

  • There they go again

    Well, that figures.

    The last thing, the very last thing, that involved athletes representing Galax High School in the 2011-12 school year was the acceptance of a state championship trophy.

    The Maroon Tide won its third state title of the year – its first ever in baseball, 41 years removed from its most recent tournament appearance – by holding off a gritty Holston 9-8 in the Group A Division 1 championship game Saturday at Radford University.

  • Tide breaks through on diamond

    UPDATE: Galax will open state tournament play on Tuesday against Clintwood at Calfee Park in Pulaski. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

     

    GLADE SPRING –– An affable and well-meaning but tongue-tied public address announcer made a mess of player introductions for both teams preceding the Region C Division 1 baseball semifinals Thursday. The guy behind the mic at least got a second chance to get Galax’s right.

  • Blues end Grayson County’s season

     INDEPENDENCE –– Garrett Bailey and Michael Vaughan made a game of it, but the Grayson County duo was not able to complete the comeback and fell to Tanner Fox and Mehmed Numanovich of Parry McCluer in the Region C doubles championship Wednesday at Grayson County High School.

    The loss ended the season for Blue Devil tennis, which dropped a 5-2 decision to Parry McCluer in the team semifinals earlier in the day.

  • Circle powers Devils to title

    INDEPENDENCE –– A box of softballs has never been so happy to see a day come to an end.

    Grace Circle pounded, flattened and pretty much demolished one unfortunate yellow orb after another Thursday, going a combined 7-for-7 with two home runs, two doubles and eight RBIs, leading Grayson County to the Mountain Empire District softball tournament championship at the Grayson Rec. Park.

  • Maroon Tide earns a breather

    PULASKI –– Galax won the one that matters. In the case of a season-ending double header against Fort Chiswell at venerable Calfee Park, the one that mattered was whichever game happened to go its way.

    With a higher preseason tiebreaker number than the Pioneers, the Maroon Tide needed only to split the double header to earn the No. 2 seed in this week’s Mountain Empire District tournament. That they did, taking a 4-2 win in the opener before falling 4-3 in the nightcap.
