  • Chris of Columbus discovers a...

HILLSVILLE –– Each of us has our own parallel universe. We never see it, and we never know what goes on there. It’s easily-imagined (There but for the grace of God go I), but it can be real enough.

It’s the place we would be, individually, had we made a different choice here or made a different friend there, had we turned left at the light instead of right. Or if fate hadn’t intervened.

Chris Smoot, a senior wideout-defensive back at Carroll County, is one of the few people who know what that parallel universe is like.

  • A Bryton shining example

Bryton McKinney never really liked dogs.

“I’ve got a phobia,” said the 6-foot-1, 240-pound senior defensive lineman.

One canine encounter nearly cost the Galax senior his life, though you’ll not find a bite mark on his entire body.

  • Why Carroll County should...

Two weeks ago, I would have found the idea of Carroll County entering the Mountain Empire District as ludicrous. When I first heard a rumor that Carroll was pursuing such a move to avoid placement in the Roanoke-centered River Ridge District, my reaction was what I imagine a lot of others’ would be. I laughed.

  • Tide battles back to nip Cavs

It may be a stretch to say Galax was right where it wanted to be, trailing by significant margins in each of the first three sets, but it certainly worked out well enough for the Maroon Tide.

Carroll County was in control in each of the first three games Tuesday but was able to secure only one of the three, and Galax held on to take a five-set nondistrict win, 21-25, 27-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12.

  • Riptide swimmers cap successful...

This year the Galax Riptide Capped of a great season at the annual Blue Ridge Swim Conference swim meet in Mt. Airy, N.C.  The team finished with 1166 points to finish second to the Elkin Wet Lightening’ 2139.5. Finishing a close third only four points behind the Riptide were the Reeves Rapids with a score of 1162, followed by the Dobson Dolphins (1006.5), the AquaTechs of Wilkesboro (638), the Wytheville Waves (631) Carroll Wellness Center Tigersharks (590).

  • Tide grounds out 38-25 win

Galax played its first game under its new lights Friday. Had they been playing under a few dozen handheld flashlights it still would have been perfectly clear – the kids Galax has running the ball are going to be better most of the time than the guys trying to tackle them.

Donte Peoples carried 22 times for 211 yards and three touchdowns while Steven Peoples added 119 yards and a TD on 13 attempts as Galax overcame a sloppy performance to hold of Glenvar 38-25 in a nondistrict game. It was the season opener for both teams.

  • Register by Friday for Senior...

Seniors 50 and older in the Twin County area have an opportunity to participate in the first-ever Twin County Senior Olympics on Sept. 14 and 15, but time is running out to register.
The deadline for registration is this Friday — Aug. 31.
The recreation departments from Carroll, Galax and Grayson, along with the Hillsville Rotary Club and Carroll Wellness Center, have teamed up to sponsor the Olympics. “They have worked very hard to make this a reality for us,” said Dennis Ward of Hillsville, the event’s organizer.

  • Galax second in state O-Zone

AMHERST –– Galax couldn’t overcome a strong Appomattox team and settled for a runner-up finish in the Dixie O-Zone state tournament recently.

The tournament couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for the District 1 champions, who scored five runs in their first at-bat of the event. Zaine Goodman, John Key, Matt Coomes and Chris Meredith had first-inning RBI base hits as Galax opened with a 17-4 win over Pulaski.

  • One more chance to shine

BRISTOL –– The overwhelming majority of high school senior football players knew they had participated in their last games back in November. Some were planning to play in college, but most figured they were done with the sport.

A fortunate handful of them were wrong.

  • U.S. Open finish reverberates to...

When it comes to professional golf, everybody has his or her favorite major.

There are those who prefer The Open Championship – the British Open – because it’s played at or near the birthplace of the game, the weather can be a beast (na’ wind, na’ golf, a Scot will say) and because the courses are so different from their American counterparts.

Some fancy The Masters simply because of the allure and the indescribable magnificence of Augusta National.
