  • Oak Hill to host Meet the Team...

MOUTH OF WILSON –– Oak Hill Academy, home of the nationally-acclaimed Warriors basketball team, will host a Meet the Gold Team fundraising event on the Oak Hill campus on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m.

  • Maroon Tide escapes Bland

BLAND –– The 3-pointer is a fickle mistress.

Galax had absolutely fallen in love with the 3-pointer over the past week, knocking down 32 of them in its last three games, but the trey loved Bland County in the early going Friday night and nearly jilted the Maroon Tide, which scraped and clawed its way to a 52-50 Mountain Empire District win at the league’s most inhospitable venue.

  • Galax gives Bland a scare, falls...

BLAND –– It was supposed to be Laurel Hankins’ big night. It was very nearly Galax’s big surprise party.

The Maroon Tide gave league-leading Bland County all it could handle for more than three quarters before the Bears pulled away down the stretch and survived with a 47-39 Mountain Empire District win Friday night.

  • Blue Devils back to .500 in MED

NARROWS – Grayson County picked up a pair of key Mountain Empire District wins and surged into second place in the standings with a 58-53 win over Narrows Friday.

The Blue Devils pulled away by hitting 12 of 15 foul shots in the fourth quarter.

Eric Harvey lad all scorers with 25 points for Grayson County (11-6 overall, 2-2 district) and Bubba Bowen chipped in 10.

Corey Lowe led three Green Wave scorers in double figures with 15 points.

    Grayson County 12 17 10 19––58

    Narrows 9 16 13 15––53

  • Cavs topple Falcons by 15

HILLSVILLE –– With two key games this week against Southwest District co-leader Abingdon, Carroll County missed out on practice Monday due to inclement weather.

Judging by Tuesday’s result, coach Marc Motley may want to give his girls free afternoons the day before every game.

Carroll County held Abingdon to 12 first-half points, fought off a second-half rally and pulled away down the stretch, taking sole possession of the SWD’s top spot with a 50-36 win.

  • Frazier’s huge night...

Cameron Frazier pumped in a career-high 36 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 30 seconds to play, as Galax got past Oak Hill Red 67-61 in a nondistrict game Monday in Galax.

The Maroon Tide (13-1) made amends for its only loss of the year, a 63-50 setback to the Warriors in mid-December.

  • Pioneers sweep Blue Devils

MAX MEADOWS –– If Fort Chiswell has made any kind of statement in the first two games of the Mountain Empire District schedule, it is that it will take a bunch of points to pick up a win against the Pioneers.

Two days after Galax needed every bit of 90 points in its four-point win over Fort Chiswell, Grayson County nearly put up as big a number, falling 91-88 in an MED game Friday.

  • Grayson girls open strong before...

MAX MEADOWS -- Grayson County enjoyed one of its better nights offensively, but Fort Chiswell was just too much to handle as the Pioneers rolled to an 82-48 win in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Friday.

  • Alouf, Frazier rain threes on...

It was a tale of two stories Friday night as Galax varsity boys dominated on their home court, while the varsity girls fell short.

The boys took to the court first and started off strong.

Galax (12-1 overall, 3-0 MED) won its eighth straight game — including its third district win in a row — when it took down Narrows (3-10, 1-1) by a final score of 78-48.

The Maroon Tide wasted no time hitting the big shots, opening the game up with a 10-0 run over the first 3:45.

  • Lady Cavs maintain SWD lead

HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County kept Richlands winless, but it wasn’t effortless.

The league-leading Cavaliers led the cellar-dwelling Blue Tornado by just five points early in the second half before pulling out to as much as a 24-point advantage, then allowing Richlands to creep back before taking a 59-48 Southwest District girls’ win Saturday afternoon.
