Wet and soggy conditions couldn't slow down the rushing attack of the Patrick County Cougars as they rumbled over Galax for a 32-6 nondistrict win Friday night.

The Cougars (4-1) managed 346 yards on 51 carries, including 180 yards from standout senior running back John Harris.

Harris, who played only a few snaps into the second half, is expected to be playing on Saturdays this time next fall and rolled over the Tide (1-4) on almost every carry.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –– As a student, DeRon Brown is doing just fine at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The kid sure hasn’t forgotten how to play football.

Brown has enjoyed a stellar first three weeks of the 2008 season at MIT, averaging nearly 200 yards per game and picking up one of New England’s top weekly football honors in the process as the Engineers have gotten off to a 2-1 start.

HILLSVILLE –– William Byrd has got it all wrong.

When a team loses 17 starters, most of them three-year starters, it isn’t supposed to be competitive. The Terriers, gutted last year by graduation, weren’t supposed to open the year 2-0. They weren’t supposed to hang within three points of Salem, and they sure as heck weren’t supposed to score 34 points and rack up more than 300 rushing yards against the No. 1 Group AA team in the state, Brookville, as they did in last week’s 49-34 loss to the Bees.
