  • Cavaliers go for sixth straight...

    HILLSVILLE –– It seems like the prudent thing to do in these days of economic downsizing –– getting to one’s destination via a smaller model than what one has grown accustomed.

    The Marion football team is no different.

    A year ago, the Scarlet Hurricane reached the Region IV Division 3 finals behind the wheel of what amounted to a Hummer and a Crown Victoria, as powerful fullback Tommy Lyon and high-performance Jordan Burrows combined for more than 2,000 rushing yards.

    This year, Marion is getting pretty much the same results from a Prius.

  • No title, but Tide plays on

    DRAPER –– For a golf team accustomed to playing for championships, second place never looked so good to Galax.

    Seemingly out of contention at one point for one of the two available state tournament berths, Galax’s superior depth came through in the form of its fifth- and sixth-seeded players, Dustin Thompson and Eddie Hanks, as the Maroon Tide squeaked into the second spot by two strokes over Radford at the Region C tournament Tuesday at Draper Valley Golf Club.

  • Grayson County meets road Hazard...

    HAZARD, Ky. –– Following a drive of nearly four hours, Grayson County was greeted by a 19-point first-quarter outpouring by one of Kentucky’s top small-school teams, falling 47-16 to Hazard in a nondistrict game at Daniel Stadium.

    The Bulldogs (5-1), ranked No. 6 among Kentucky 1A schools, scored on every possession through the first three quarters to deal the Blue Devils their sixth straight defeat without a win.

  • Maroon Tide drops Grayson

    INDEPENDENCE –– Galax bounced back from a big second-game deficit and swept the season series with Grayson County 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 in a Mountain Empire District volleyball match Tuesday night at Grayson County Middle School.

    “We seemed really fired-up and ready to play,” said Maroon Tide coach Rose Houk after her team improved to 8-6 overall, 3-1 in district play. “This was a really big win for us. We showed a huge improvement in our serving.”

  • Cavs block Falcon comeback

    HILLSVILLE –– As members of Carroll County’s wing-T offense, every player is counted on to block at one time or another. Zack Surratt did his in a little different manner than most.

    Surratt got his hands on two Abingdon kicks, including the batting down of a potential game-tying field goal with 17 seconds left, as the Cavaliers withstood a Falcon rally to survive with a 21-18 homecoming win in a Southwest District game Friday at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Schaeffer blisters back nine for...

    DRAPER –– A photographer came upon the threesome that included Galax’s Kyle Schaeffer during the Mountain Empire District golf tournament Monday at Draper Valley Golf Course.

    “Make sure you get some shots of the Schaeffer kid,” said the tournament staffer assigned to the group. “He’s birdied the last two holes.”

    The photographer later moved forward one group, to the threesome that included Galax’s Rob Guynn.

  • Carroll County notches key SWD...

    ABINGDON –– What many expected to be one of Carroll County’s toughest Southwest District volleyball matches turned into a runaway as the Cavaliers rolled past Abingdon 25-15, 25-13, 25-7 Thursday night.

    The win was the 10th straight without a loss for Carroll County, which upped its record to 5-0 in SWD play.

  • Tide boys take third in...

    HILLSVILLE –– Manuel Echeagaray wasn’t able to outrun Radford’s Charles Mogen, but he did outrun every Galax runner. Ever.

    Himself included.

    Echeagaray placed a strong second in the Maroon Tide Invitational cross country meet Wednesday at the Southwest Virginia Training Center, breaking his own school record for a 3.1-mile course with a blistering time of 16 minutes, 18 seconds as the Maroon Tide finished in third place out of a field of 19 teams and 105 individuals.

  • Maroon Tide golfers win three of...

    Galax's golf team put in some miles over the course of last week, playing four matches in four days and coming away with three wins.

    Monday at Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd, the Maroon Tide got 39s from Kyle Schaeffer and Scott Alouf to down Floyd County 159-184. Dustin Thompson shot a 40 for Galax, while Brock Cox carded a 41.

    Galax's B team also came away with a win Monday as Matthew Downey's 40 led the Tide to a four-man score of 172. Jacob Woodel (43), Will Crawford (44) and Travis Cockerham (45) also contributed.
