  • Cavs finish strong to win SWD

HILLSVILLE –– When Kayla Goins stepped to the foul line with the Southwest District title game knotted at 37 and with 4.3 seconds left on the clock, it would be safe to say that Carroll County was due.

The Cavaliers had missed 13 of their previous 16 free throws, including the last eight straight, before Goins calmly swished both shots, giving top-seeded Carroll County a 39-37 win over Graham and the tournament championship to go with its season title.

  • Tide rolls Pioneers for MED title

MAX MEADOWS — With 1.2 seconds remaining on the clock Friday night Galax’s Cameron Frazier sealed the deal earning the Maroon Tide a 78-73 Mountain Empire District Tournament championship win over Fort Chiswell to go along with its regular season MED title.

Rewind to half time of the championship game Friday night and it appeared Fort Chiswell (9-14) had Galax’s number. The Tide (22-2) struggled early and trailed 43-31 at the end of the first 16 minutes — proving regular season records mean nothing come tournament time.

  • Six advance to state semifinals

SALEM –– A half-dozen Twin County wrestlers put themselves one win away from the state finals in their respective weight classes, finishing Friday’s first two rounds undefeated during the Group A and Group AA state tournaments at the Salem Civic Center.

In Group A, brothers Edu and Jose Rojas of Galax each reached the semifinals, along with Grayson County’s Cody McGuire and Richard Pugh.

  • Tide survives another Bland scare

MAX MEADOWS "" Under the bucket and in traffic with a chance to give Galax the win with either a layup or a free throw, Deion George kicked the ball 20 feet outside to Scott Alouf. By going backwards, the Maroon Tide is going forward.

Alouf calmly drilled a 3-pointer at the horn as Galax took a thrilling 56-53 win in the Mountain Empire District semifinals Wednesday at Fort Chiswell High School. The Maroon Tide will face Fort Chiswell, an 89-83 winner over Grayson County, in tonight’s championship game at 6 p.m.

  • Devils fall to Pioneers

MAX MEADOWS –– Tyler Akers, Andrew White and Hody Viars combined to score 72 of Fort Chiswell’s 89 points and the Pioneers outlasted Grayson County 89-83 in the Mountain Empire District semifinals Wednesday.

The second-seeded Blue Devils (15-8) and the No. 3 Pioneers (9-13) battled through nine ties and 13 lead changes before Fort Chiswell took the lead for good with 2:15 left in the third period when Andrew White scored from close range for a 52-51 Pioneer lead.

  • Tide lives to play another day

Having just watched her team squeak past Grayson County, Galax coach Jamie Dotson had precious few positive things to say about the night. Among them, her girls hit some key free throws, and they were disappointed in themselves.

Add to that the fact they did move on to the next round.

In a perfect example of surviving and advancing, the fourth-seeded Maroon Tide fought off a spirited effort by No. 5 Grayson County and advanced to the Mountain Empire District semifinals, holding off the Blue Devils 45-34 in a play-in game Monday night.

  • Winners of MED tournaments will...

Basketball may be a non-contact sport, but whoever cuts down the nets following this week’s MED tournaments may do so with a proverbial black eye, because both the girls’ and the boys’ tournaments could prove to be real dogfights.

No. 5 Grayson County visits No. 4 Galax as the girls’ bracket gets under way tonight, while Bland County travels to No. 4 Narrows as the boys begin their tournament.
