    RICHLANDS –– Carroll County was finally able to get past the early stages of a district game without finding itself in an early hole, but the Cavaliers weren’t able to make the strong start hold up as Richlands clinched the Southwest District championship with a 23-7 win Friday at Ernie Hicks Stadium.

  • Pioneers stop 14-year slide

    MAX MEADOWS –– For the first time since 1994, Fort Chiswell has left a football game against Grayson County with a smile on its face.

    The Pioneers used a 19-point outburst in the second period to end a 14-game losing streak to the Blue Devils, taking a 25-6 win in a Mountain Empire District game Friday at C.F. McKinney Field.

  • Tide keeps hold on MED titles

    HILLSVILLE –– Galax won the Mountain Empire District boys’ cross country championship for the 18th time in the program’s 20 years of existence, placing seven runners among the top eight spots during the district meet Wednesday at the Southwest Virginia Training Center.

  • Cavaliers spike Grayson Co.

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County opened strong in all three games of its nondistrict match with Grayson County, knocking off the Blue Devils 25-5, 25-10, 25-12 Thursday.

    Carroll County (16-0 overall) bolted to an 11-1 lead in the first game with an 8-0 run sparked by Leanna Rippey’s kill. Kim Caudill had two jump-serve aces while Rippey and Lindsey Poe each had a kill in the run.

  • Fort overwhelms Maroon Tide

    MAX MEADOWS –– With four of the five Mountain Empire District football teams entering Week 9 with no district losses, there was a lot left to be decided, and just four games with which to do so. The picture began to take shape Friday.

    Fort Chiswell racked up 30 points in the second quarter and rolled over Galax 47-7 in a Mountain Empire District win. It was the MED opener for the Pioneers, who join Bland County as the last two unbeatens in the league. Bland bumped off Narrows 14-7 in Friday’s only other MED contest.

  • Cavaliers roll over Grundy

    GRUNDY ––Carroll County found itself trailing in the opening minutes before exploding for six unanswered touchdowns Friday, rolling to a 41-7 Southwest District win over Grundy at Nelson Memorial Stadium.

    Entering the contest on a 16-game district losing streak, Grundy (1-7 overall, 0-4 SWD) jumped to an early lead when Tanner McClanahan returned a Cavalier fumble 30 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

  • Cavs keep record spotless

    In a battle between leaders of their respective districts, Carroll County held off several Galax surges and kept its season record perfect following a 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 nondistrict win Monday at Galax High School.

    The win was the 14th without a loss for the Cavaliers, who have a firm grip on the Southwest District lead. Being in the SWD driver’s seat at this time of the season isn’t a surprise for the Cavaliers. Being 14-0 is to some.

    BRISTOL –– Taking a nine-stroke lead into the second day of the Group A state golf championships Tuesday at Clear Creek Golf Course, Galax would have liked nothing better than a repeat of its first day’s performance. That’s what it got – nothing better. But it was more than enough.

  • Galax holds on for state title

    BRISTOL –– Galax won its fourth state golf championship and its second in the last five years, grinding through a tough course and a tough field Tuesday to win the team title by 12 strokes over Giles at Clear Creek Golf Club.

    The Maroon Tide adds the team championship to the Group AA crown it won in 1974 and the Group A titles claimed in 1988 and 2004.

  • Marion stops 2-pointer to top...

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County was denied on a two-point conversion with 1:09 to play as Marion escaped with a 15-13 Southwest District win Friday at Tommy Thompson Field.

    Trailing 15-7, the Cavaliers (3-4 overall, 1-2 district) took over on their own 15 following a Zack Surratt interception and drove the length of the field, capping the drive with Dillon Caviness’ 28-yard TD reception from Blake Bowman. Fullback Cody Mabe was stopped at the 1-yard-line on the PAT as Marion held on.
