  • Caudill named region's best

    HILLSVILLE –– In voting for the Region IV player of the year award, one of the coaches from the ultra-powerful River Ridge District said she would take Kim Caudill in a heartbeat.

    No further endorsement necessary.

    Caudill, who helped lead Carroll County to one of its most successful seasons ever, was named the top player in both the Southwest District and in Region IV, capping a career that made her the top offensive threat in CCHS history.

  • Galax finishes fifth in Group A

    MANASSAS –– Galax’s boys’ cross country team finished among the top five in the state for the third consecutive year, placing fifth in the Group A championships Saturday at the Great Meadows course.

    Led by a fifth-place finish by Manuel Echeagaray, the Maroon Tide finished with 174 team points, just three points behind Northumberland for the fourth spot. It was Galax’s eighth top-five effort in the school’s 16 trips to the state meet.

  • Galax enjoys happy ending

    WAR, W.Va. — It's an old clich, often times a non-sports one, that “something slipped through someone's fingers.”

    Literally and figuratively that's exactly what happened Friday night to the Big Creek Owls, as they lost four second-half fumbles and a pass interception in a 34-28 loss to Galax.

    With those miscues, and the resulting defeat, the Owls (7-2) may have lost a chance at the West Virginia Class A playoffs. Galax finished its season at 3-7.

  • Bears wrap up MED crown

    INDEPENDENCE –– Bland County scored twice in the first 2:11 of the second half to break open a tight game and claim its first outright Mountain Empire District championship, knocking off defending champion Grayson County 29-14 Friday at Bill Strong Field.

    The Bears (9-1 overall, 4-0 district), who earned a share of the MED title on two previous occasions, will enter the Region C Division 1 playoffs as the No. 1 seed while Grayson County ends its season at 0-10, 0-4.

  • Galax brings end of era to Big...

    Galax is going to War.

    Finding its schedule one game short after the closure of former Mountain Empire District member Pocahontas last summer, Galax filled out its schedule with a one-time meeting against Big Creek, located in War, W.Va., where the Maroon Tide will close the curtain on the 2008 season against the 7-2 Owls.

    INDEPENDENCE –– Nobody goes into a football season hoping to go 1-9, although it is certainly better than 0-10. Although if fate deals a team a one-win season, it would definitely be better to end a season with a win than to start with one.

    Grayson County will attempt to pick up its first win of the year, end the season on a high note and throw a wrench into the Mountain Empire District race tonight when the Blue Devils (0-9 overall, 0-3 district) host league leader Bland County (8-1, 3-0) as the regular season winds to a close in Virginia.

  • Cavs win SWD, advance in...

    HILLSVILLE –– For a while it looked as if Carroll County would need little more than 45 minutes to take care of Patrick County in the Region IV quarterfinals Tuesday. And for a while it looked like the match would go a full five games.

    The Cavaliers were happy with the compromise.

    Carroll County dominated the first two games before Patrick County rallied to make a match of it, with the Cavaliers eventually pulling off a 25-9, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22 victory.

    Carroll coach Cindy Edwards was happy to see it end in the fourth game.

  • Tide puts up fight in Region C...

    WYTHEVILLE –– If you’re going to go down, you may as well go down swinging.

    Galax played one of its most aggressive, most spirited matches of the year Wednesday but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome George Wythe as the Maroon Tide fell 25-16, 25-22, 25-22 in the Region C quarterfinals at George Wythe High School.

    Galax, the runner-up in the Mountain Empire District, ends its season at 13-11 while George Wythe advances to tomorrow’s semifinals at Northwood with an overall mark of 15-6.
