  • Brown re-writing MIT record books

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are expected to do great things, maybe even make history. Almost all of them do so with their intellect. DeRon Brown has already rewritten the history of MIT football.

    Brown, a junior from Galax and a 2005 graduate of Grayson County High School, carried 20 times for 165 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday’s 27-14 loss to Plymouth State, maintaining his status as the No. 1 Division III ballcarrier in the nation while breaking MIT’s career rushing record.

  • Tide second in Region C; Durham...

    BRISTOL –– Galax’s boys cross country team endured extremely windy conditions Wednesday and breezed into the state meet for the 16th time in the program’s 20-year history, earning a runner-up finish at the Region C championships at Sugar Hollow Park.

  • Cavaliers finish with a bang

    HILLSVILLE –– What a nice night for a drive.

    Carroll County turned a possible game-changing special teams play by Graham into a 99-yard scoring march early in the third quarter and rolled on to a 47-6 shelling of the G-Men in the Southwest District finale for both teams Friday at Tommy Thompson Field.

    The win was Carroll’s first since 2004 against the G-Men and only the second in the 15-game history of the series. Carroll County ends its season at 5-5, 3-3 in the district, while Graham awaits a possible playoff berth after finishing at 4-6, 3-3.

  • Harlan thumps Grayson 69-20

    INDEPENDENCE -- For the second time this season, Grayson County has played a Kentucky football team. And for the second time the outcome has been a disaster for the Blue Devils.

    Harlan County rolled into Bill Strong Field Friday night and when the smoke cleared, the Black Bears had beaten Grayson County 69-20. Harlan County (6-3) scored in every quarter and made the Blue Devils (0-9) pay for every mistake on the scoreboard.

  • Cavaliers run win streak to 21...

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County survived one of its worst games of the year and was still able to come away with a four-game win, knocking off Marion 25-20, 17-25, 25-13, 25-19 in the Southwest District tournament volleyball semifinals Thursday.

    The Cavaliers remained undefeated after 21 matches with the win and advanced to the tournament finals on Saturday, where they faced Abingdon, a four-game winner over Tazewell in the night’s first semifinal.

  • Quick start leads Wave past Galax

    NARROWS – Galax lost for the seventh time in its past eight games, falling to Narrows 27-8 Friday night in a Mountain Empire District game at Ragsdale Field.

    The Tide (2-7 overall, 1-3 district) lost the battle up front as Narrows’ offense line pushed around Galax’s defenders all night.

  • Maroon Tide can't repeat...

    The predicted high-scoring affair between Galax and Bland County never materialized Friday night, as a steady rain and field conditions slowed the teams to a scoreless first half before the Bears pulled away to win 19-8 on two late touchdowns.

    The Maroon Tide held an 8-6 lead into the fourth quarter, until Cory Andrews put Mountain Empire District co-leader Bland on top for good with a 3-yard touchdown run with 8:02 remaining.

  • MED volleyball title slips past...

    WYTHEVILLE –– After a combined 40-plus matches played by Galax and Fort Chiswell, the entire previous three months all came down to one little game to 15.

    In a one-match playoff to decide the Mountain Empire District regular season championship, Fort Chiswell rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the fifth game and scored the final eight points to defeat Galax 17-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-17, 15-9 at George Wythe High School.

  • Richlands wraps up SWD title

    RICHLANDS –– Carroll County was finally able to get past the early stages of a district game without finding itself in an early hole, but the Cavaliers weren’t able to make the strong start hold up as Richlands clinched the Southwest District championship with a 23-7 win Friday at Ernie Hicks Stadium.

  • Pioneers stop 14-year slide

    MAX MEADOWS –– For the first time since 1994, Fort Chiswell has left a football game against Grayson County with a smile on its face.

    The Pioneers used a 19-point outburst in the second period to end a 14-game losing streak to the Blue Devils, taking a 25-6 win in a Mountain Empire District game Friday at C.F. McKinney Field.
