  • Auburn rides big start to win

    INDEPENDENCE –– It’s difficult enough, trying to hang with a team that shoots better than 50 percent from the floor and commits fewer than 10 turnovers. Doing so after spotting that team a 26-point lead makes it pretty much impossible.

    Auburn scored the first 26 points of its nondistrict game with Grayson County and rolled to a 61-21 win Friday night.

  • Cavaliers drop heartbreaker to...

    RICHLANDS –– Robbie Lawrence’s basket and free throw put Richlands in front with 11 seconds left and the Blue Tornado held off Carroll County 54-53 in a Southwest District boys’ game Friday.

    Carroll County led 53-51 when Lawrence drove the lane and was fouled, hitting the bucket and the ensuing foul shot to put Richlands in front.

    The Cavaliers had a 3-point attempt for the win rim out.

    The aptly-named Gunner McGee led all scorers with 32 points for Richlands, and Lawrence finished with 10 points.

  • Carroll County wins anyway

    HILLSVILLE –– When Carroll County found itself trailing by three points with less than 90 seconds remaining in its game Monday against Patrick County, it’s a good bet the Cavaliers’ strategy wasn’t to clank a bunch of free throws.

    But hey, if it works…

    The Cavaliers hit just 5-of-14 from the foul line in the final minute and 23 seconds but were still able to rally for their first victory of the year, knocking off the Cougars 46-44 for a nondistrict win.

  • Warriors run past Maroon Tide

    CHILHOWIE –– Though the varying level of competition has been a big factor in the up-and-down start to Galax’s girls’ basketball season, and though Chilhowie can most certainly provide a stiffer test than a couple of earlier opponents, the Maroon Tide is still waiting to string two strong outings together.

    Tuesday, Galax led going into the second quarter before a pair of lengthy scoreless streaks led to a 59-31 nondistrict loss to the host Warriors in the first round of the Greever Crouse Tournament at Chilhowie High School.

  • Grayson County boys hold off...

    SPARTA, N.C. –– Bubba Bowen scored with a minute left to give Grayson County a one-point lead and sank two foul shots with four seconds remaining to ice the win as the Blue Devils edged Alleghany in a nondistrict game Wednesday night.

    Alleghany (1-6) controlled the tempo and took a 25-22 halftime lead. Grayson County was able to pick up the pace with 19 third-quarter points, leading 41-40 entering the final period.

  • Hash leads Tide past Warriors

    SALTVILLE –– Justin Hash scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, as Galax whipped Chilhowie 56-48 Monday in the first round of the Greever Crouse Tournament at Northwood High School.

    Galax (4-1) trailed 25-23 at halftime before taking charge with a 13-4 run in the third period.

    Scott Alouf added 11 points for the Maroon Tide. Andrew Russell scored 16 points for the Warriors (0-3).

  • Tide silences Rockets

    Coming off a disappointing showing the night before against George Wythe, Galax girls’ basketball coach Jamie Dotson felt that the less said before a Friday bout with Craig County, the better.

    Dotson should write down what she didn’t say in her pre-game non-speech, and remember to non-use it again at a key moment in the future.

    After getting the silent treatment, the Maroon Tide let its play do the talking as it rolled over the Rockets 61-27 in a nondistrict game Friday.

  • Cavs, Hawks get first win

    HILLSVILLE –– Having opened the season with a pair of losses, the prospects for Carroll County’s first win of the year – and career win No. 1 for head coach Brad Hawks – didn’t look too promising to start with Tuesday night.

    The Cavaliers made it a pressing matter.

    Falling behind 16-3 barely four minutes into the game, Carroll County turned up the defensive intensity and rolled to a 70-53 win over Grayson County in a nondistrict game Tuesday.

  • Tide gets defensive in 55-19 win

    The best thing about good defense is that it never experiences a shooting slump.

    Though Galax struggled offensively, its pressure defense completely stymied Holston until a few Maroon Tide shots began to fall, allowing Galax to run away with a 55-19 win over the Cavaliers in a nondistrict game Monday.

    “We were doing what we wanted to do. We were playing good defense, we were creating turnovers and getting steals, we just weren’t laying it in the basket,” said Galax coach Jamie Dotson. “We weren’t in rhythm on offense at all.”

  • Carroll County wrestlers go 3-2...

    ROANOKE –– Carroll County finished with three wins and two losses in the Cave Spring duals wrestling tournament, held last weekend at Cave Spring High School.

    The Cavaliers opened the event with a pair of wins, topping Covington 42-30 and William Fleming 48-28, before dropping decisions to Salem (36-33) and Cave Spring (55-12).

    The Cavaliers wrapped up the tournament with a 55-22 defeat of Franklin County.
