  • Cougars edge Cavaliers

    HILLSVILLE –– Pulaski County has evidently been working hard on its free throw defense.

    The Cougars took advantage of a chilly night at the foul line by the Cavaliers and held off a second-half rally to escape with a 48-41 nondistrict win Monday night.

    Carroll County hit just 6-of-19 from the stripe, or 31.6 percent, in falling to 4-5 on the year. The Cougars crept over the .500 mark with the win, improving to 5-4.

  • McCraw wins Skeens title, Bowman...

    GRUNDY –– Carroll County had four wrestlers reach the championship finals and placed ninth out of 36 teams at the prestigious 29th annual Agie Skeens Memorial Tournament Dec. 29-30 at Riverview Middle School.

    Drew McCraw finished the event 4-0 and won the individual championship in the 275-pound weight class. McCraw drew a first-round bye and followed up with two pins, sticking Michael LaPrade of Turner Ashby in 1 minute, 34 seconds, then pinning Alleghany’s Martin Garcia 46 seconds into the championship quarterfinals.

  • Cavaliers sweep Golden Wave

    GRUNDY –– Carroll County rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final four minutes to overtake Grundy 70-65 in a Southwest District boys’ game Saturday afternoon.

    Grundy’s Jordan Ellis sank two foul shots for a 61-53 Golden Wave lead before James Lanning’s 3-pointer sparked a 17-4 Cavalier run to the final horn.

    Tyler Reavis’ layup gave Carroll County the lead for good, 64-62, with 1:15 to play. Reavis led all scorers with 25 points, Lucas Marshall scored a career-high 14 and Lanning chipped in 12.

  • The best of 2008

    Many of the nation’s leading sports news outlets are hailing 2008 as the best sports year ever. It kind of depends on your perspective.

    For example, it’s very doubtful the Detroit Lions, the University of Washington football team or the Memphis men’s basketball team would agree. Nor would Jake Brown, the X-Games skateboarder who augured into the ground from 40-plus feet on national television.

  • Harvey, Devils light up Panthers

    INDEPENDENCE –– There are still 363 days to go, but so far, Eric Harvey is finding 2009 much to his liking.

    Harvey enjoyed a near-record night and Grayson County overcame a slow start to pummel Northwood 71-54 in a nondistrict game Friday night.

  • Tide girls lose heartbreaker;...

    SPARTA, N.C. –– Both of Galax’s basketball teams trudged off the floor following their respective bouts with Elkin on Tuesday, wearily walking toward the locker rooms following an exhausting 32 minutes of play.

    Galax’s boys were feeling the evening in their legs and in their lungs. No less physically drained, the Tide girls were feeling the effects more in their hearts and in their minds.

  • Scorching second half lifts...

    SPARTA, N.C. –– Grayson County made it 4-for-4 for the Virginia boys, knocking off host Alleghany 65-53 in the Cross Border Shootout Tuesday night.

    The Blue Devils and Galax both went 2-0 in the event. Grayson County shot nearly 80 percent from the floor in the second half, hitting 19 of 24 attempts to pull away from a 22-21 halftime lead.

    Eric Harvey led Grayson County with 19 points and Tyler Rutherford scored 13 of his 16 after halftime.

    Cody Miller led all scorers with 20 points for the Trojans and Julian McNeil added 17.

  • Floyd pulls away from Cavs

    MAX MEADOWS –– Carroll County battled back from a 10-point deficit to trail Floyd County just 40-39 midway through the third period, but the Buffaloes answered with a 9-0 run and sent the Cavaliers to the bottom bracket of the Wythe County Christmas Tournament with a 71-55 win Friday at Fort Chiswell High School.

  • Three Cavaliers place in North...

    LEXINGTON, N.C. –– Carroll County had three wrestlers finish among the top 10 in their individual weight classes at the King of the Mat Invitational, hosted by North Davidson High School on Dec. 21-22.

    Heavyweight Drew McCraw brought home a third-place finish, 130-pounder Blake Bowman placed fourth and Aaron Willard gritted his way to a ninth-place finish in the tournament, which included 37 teams from as far away as Wisconsin, Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

  • Grayson boys withstand Elkin...

    SPARTA, N.C. –– Those 28-point second-half leads sure do come in handy at times.

    Grayson County built a massive lead midway through the third quarter and then sweated it out as Elkin pulled to within three points with possession of the ball before the Blue Devils hung on for a 65-62 nondistrict win Monday in the Cross-Border Shootout at Alleghany High School.
