    HILLSVILLE -- Carroll County senior Kayla Goins posted a triple-double for the second time in three days as the Cavaliers withstood a challenge by Abingdon, taking a 56-46 win in a Southwest District game Friday. Carroll County (11-3 overall, 5-0 district) was outscored in the middle two quarters by the Falcons (3-8, 1-4) and led just 35-34 entering the fourth quarter before pulling away down the stretch.

    HILLSVILLE -- Once again, Carroll County found itself in the middle of a physical, low-scoring dogfight with Graham.

  • Pioneers roll past Devils by 37

    INDEPENDENCE -- Fort Chiswell scored the game’s first eight points and never looked back, coasting to a 64-27 win over Grayson County in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Friday. Carlytta Hamm scored from underneath to cap an 8-0 Pioneer run to open the game, and Fort Chiswell closed the first quarter with seven straight points, taking a 17-3 lead on Elizabeth Waller’s layup.

  • Big first half lifts Devils, 82-...

    INDEPENDENCE -- The 3-pointer is overrated, anyway. Grayson County drew a blank when it came to the long ball but managed 82 points the old-fashioned way, running past Fort Chiswell 82-69 in a Mountain Empire District boys’ game Friday. The Blue Devils (10-2 overall, 3-0 district) did most of their damage in the first two quarters, jumping out to a 50-27 lead at halftime.

     NEW CASTLE -- Galax found itself in a ballgame at halftime but dominated the second half, rolling to an 80-37 win over Craig County in a nondistrict game Monday.
