  • Cavs bear down, break through

    HILLSVILLE –– For the second straight year, Carroll County threw a dominant defensive effort at Martinsville. This time around, the Cavaliers were smiling while exiting the field.

    Carroll County picked up its first victory of the season by forcing four turnovers and pulling away for a 36-16 nondistrict win Friday on homecoming night at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Wilson records hole-in-one at...

     Herb Wilson recorded a hole-in-one recently while playing at Galax Municipal Golf Course.

    Wilson aced the par-3, 145-yard ninth hole while playing a round with Press Turbyfill, Dale Kerns and Ken Cooper.

  • Cavs keep momentum going

    HILLSVILLE –– Through a long and successful coaching career that has far surpassed the 200-win mark, Cindy Edwards still hasn’t quite gotten the grasp of coaching experience to her Carroll County volleyball players.

    The concept is catching on by itself, though.

    Having endured its share of growing pains through a 1-3 start, Edwards’ Cavaliers won their sixth straight match Monday, avenging an earlier loss to Galax with a 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 nondistrict win.

  • Grayson bounces back big

    INDEPENDENCE –– After absorbing a thorough clubbing by Grayson County last year, Clintwood went on to win 13 straight games, including a state championship. Grayson County incurred an equally-complete beatdown in Clintwood a week ago. Nobody is saying the Blue Devils will bounce back with 13 wins in a row, but they are off to a good start.

    Grayson was nearly unstoppable on offense Friday night and concluded the nondistrict portion of its schedule with a 45-20 trouncing of Carroll County at Bill Strong Field.

  • Carroll administrators happy...

     HILLSVILLE –– The executive committee of the Virginia High School League went against the grain – and its redistricting and reclassification committee –  and sided with Carroll County and the River Ridge District by removing proposed member Franklin County from the RRD and placing it into the Piedmont District beginning with the 2013-14 school year.

  • Galax positively gets it done

    RADFORD –– Galax hasn’t gotten to where it’s been the last couple of years by constantly being patted on the back by its coaching staff. Part of the job of Mark Dixon and his deputies is to find mistakes, point them out and correct them. But it’s hard to find fault when you walk off of Norm Lineburg Field with a win.

  • Britt defends BRCC Invitational...

    Shirl Britt came from four shots behind Aug. 12 to win the 46th annual Blue Ridge Country Club Invitational.

    Britt, from West End, N.C., the defending champion, shot a 3-under par 67 in Saturday’s round and then shot a 7-under 63 for a 129 total for the easy seven-shot victory.

    Second place went to Frank McBayer of Hillsville, who shot rounds of 69 and 67 for a tournament total of 136. Third place went to Brad Chambers of Galax, with rounds of 68 and 69 for a 137.

  • Carroll appeal falls on deaf ears

    CHARLOTTESVILLE –– For now, it looks like Carroll County is stuck.

    Appeals by both Carroll County and Pulaski County were denied Tuesday by the Virginia High School League as the two schools tried to prevent the inclusion of Franklin County in the River Ridge District should the VHSL approve a 6A classification system beginning next school year.

  • Peoples’ huge night paces Tide

    ELLISTON –– Galax’s defense kept Eastern Montgomery well under control until a mistake-prone Maroon Tide offense could get over some early-game troubles, and Galax eventually came around and rolled to a 42-22 nondistrict win Friday over the Mustangs.

    Galax (2-1) limited EastMont (2-1) to six offensive snaps in the first period, owning the ball for nearly 10 of the quarter’s 12 minutes, but two lengthy Tide possessions netted only a lot of yards, two turnovers, a slew of penalties and no points.

  • Gennette fifth at national meet

     HERSHEY, Pa. – Alix Gennette ran a personal best time and finished fifth in the North American finals of the 1600 meter run at the National Hershey Track and Field championships in early August.

    Gennette’s time of 4 minutes, 45.4 seconds earned a fifth-place finish in the boys’ 13-14 age group and set a new school record for Galax Middle School, cutting more than six seconds off of his own record set this past spring.
