  • Scrappy Tide scrapes by Eagles

CLINCHPORT –– Having reached the state volleyball quarterfinals three straight years now, Galax knows that the northeasterly route to the final four in Richmond is a circuitous one. It starts with a three-hour excursion in the opposite direction.

  • Grayson grounds Hawks

INDEPENDENCE –– A new champion will be crowned in Group A Division 2 this year. It may or may not be Grayson County, but the Blue Devils made sure there would be no repeat by Gretna.

Eighth-seeded Grayson took a commanding 31-7 halftime lead and fought off second half rally by the No. 9 Hawks, holding on for a 44-31 win in the Western Section Division 2 playoffs Friday at Bill Strong Field.

  • Big rally lifts Blue Devils

Unable to finish a drive in the first half, Grayson County found a way to finish the game in the second half.

Stopped time and again by Galax deep in Maroon Tide territory, the Blue Devils found themselves trailing 28-6 early in the second half before rallying for a 32-28 Mountain Empire District win on the final Friday night of the regular season.

  • Cavaliers back atop SWD

WYTHEVILLE –– It has long been the hope of Cindy Edwards to see Southwest District volleyball reach the competitive level of the River Ridge District. It’s an aspiration strong enough to warrant cooperation between SWD coaches to strive toward that end.

Whether the River Ridge is ever caught up to remains to be seen, but it sure has made the SWD a lot more interesting.

  • Marion surges past Cavaliers

HILLSVILLE –– Marion used consecutive one-play scoring drives in the third quarter to break open a tight ballgame, and the Scarlet Hurricane dominated the second half to take a 35-6 Southwest District win over Carroll County Friday at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Pioneers power past Devils

MAX MEADOWS –– Fort Chiswell used a dominant effort in the second half to pull away from a 21-21 tie and take command of the Mountain Empire District race, doubling up Grayson County 42-41 Friday at C.F. McKinney Field.

“We just couldn’t get them off the field,” Grayson County coach Brett McPherson said. “Every time they needed something, they made it.”

  • Graham guns past Galax

In January of this year, Galax’s boys’ basketball team defeated Graham 43-31. The G-Men found their shooting touch on the football field Friday.

Graham racked up nearly 600 yards of offense, the final 63 of which led to a go-ahead touchdown with 42 seconds left as the G-Men outgunned the Maroon Tide 45-42 in a Mountain Empire District game.

In a contest that featured five lead changes in the second half alone, Graham just happened to have the ball last, and evened its MED record at 1-1, 5-2 overall. Galax dropped to 0-2, 4-3.

  • Bryant upholds family tradition

BIG STONE GAP –– Like father, like brother.

The VHSL Group A golf championship? It’s all in the Bryant family.

Galax senior John Bryant became the third member of his household to win the state title as he fired a 1-under-par 70 to score a seven-stroke victory at Lonesome Pine Country Club.

Bryant’s feat matched that of older brother, Sam, who won the 2005 Group A crown. Together, the Bryant brothers have as many first-place medals as their father, Doug, who captured titles in 1975 and 1977 for old Independence High.

  • Blue Devils take care of G-Men

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. –– Playing a district game for the first time in another state, Grayson County was simply in another league.

The Blue Devils stymied Graham’s offense most of the day while two Grayson runningbacks darted and dashed their way to more than 100 yards each in a 36-17 MED win Saturday at venerable Mitchell Stadium.

Grayson County improved to 5-1 overall, 1-0 in the district on the damp and chilly afternoon while Graham dropped to 4-2, 0-1.
