WYTHEVILLE –– It has long been the hope of Cindy Edwards to see Southwest District volleyball reach the competitive level of the River Ridge District. It’s an aspiration strong enough to warrant cooperation between SWD coaches to strive toward that end.

Whether the River Ridge is ever caught up to remains to be seen, but it sure has made the SWD a lot more interesting.

MAX MEADOWS –– Fort Chiswell used a dominant effort in the second half to pull away from a 21-21 tie and take command of the Mountain Empire District race, doubling up Grayson County 42-41 Friday at C.F. McKinney Field.

“We just couldn’t get them off the field,” Grayson County coach Brett McPherson said. “Every time they needed something, they made it.”

The VHSL Group A golf championship? It’s all in the Bryant family.

Galax senior John Bryant became the third member of his household to win the state title as he fired a 1-under-par 70 to score a seven-stroke victory at Lonesome Pine Country Club.

Bryant’s feat matched that of older brother, Sam, who won the 2005 Group A crown. Together, the Bryant brothers have as many first-place medals as their father, Doug, who captured titles in 1975 and 1977 for old Independence High.
