  • Winding road takes Leonard to Ky...

There is no quick and easy way to get from Independence, Va. to Asbury University in Wilmore, Ky. The drive there is some 350 miles long and consumes nearly six hours.

Even if there were a shortcut from here to a place just southwest of Lexington, Ky., Dustin Leonard has taken the roundabout path to play college baseball for the Eagles.

  • Carroll teams reach AAA final...

WYTHEVILLE –– A pair of extra-inning thrillers highlighted the first three days of play at the District 1 Dixie AAA tournament at Ager Park in Wytheville.

Carroll County American and Floyd County battled to a 1-0 decision, putting put on as well-played a game as any group of 9- and 10-year-olds will play anywhere, while Galax and Carroll County National went to extras to see who stayed alive in the event.

  • Galax, Carroll American play on

WYTHEVILLE –– It took about a week longer than it was expected to, but the District 1 Dixie O-Zone tournament finally wrapped up Thursday as Galax earned a state tournament berth with a dominating performance. Two days later, Carroll County American locked up its state tournament berth by winning the District 1 AAA championship over Wythe West.

In the O-Zone (11-12) final, Galax took a slim 1-0 lead into the top of the fourth before exploding down the stretch and scoring a dozen runs in the final three innings of its 13-1 win.

  • A reminder: don’t forget to...

Over the years I have told several people that, as much as anything, I am in the scrapbooking business.

Yeah, I work at a newspaper. The Gazette pays my bills, buys my groceries and fills my gas tank. In return, I go to a bunch of ballgames, write about them and take some photos.

Seeing as how at one time or another I have lugged furniture, turned wrenches, wrestled cotton bales and waded through both pepper trash and sawdust for a living, that seems like a pretty decent deal on my part.

  • Isom named to all-state team

Dylan Isom’s biggest contributions this year arguably came from the pitching mound. It says a lot about the overall year Isom had that the Grayson County senior was voted all-state in what was his second position.

Isom, one of many key components in a season that saw the Blue Devils reach the state semifinals, was voted first-team all-Group A as a third baseman to go with having earned first-team all-Region C and Mountain Empire District player of the year honors.

  • MMA fighter has eyes on the prize

CJ Cochran, an MMA fighter trained at Elite Combat Martial Arts and Fitness in Galax, took home his first win on April 27 at “Ring of Dreams” in Winston-Salem, N.C., and is preparing for his next fight.
Unlike some fighters, Cochran isn't battling for gold or glory.
He’s doing it for his mom, and for his future.
Master trainer Heather Pyles of Elite Combat said that Cochran,18, is focused on continuing his training and studying business so that he can one day open his own gym.

  • Hornet sophomore shuts down Blue...

RADFORD –– Delay after weather-related delay pushed back Grayson County’s Group A Division 2 state baseball semifinal game 24 hours, then three more hours, then three more again. It seemed to take forever to get the thing started.

The Blue Devil bat rack never did catch up.

Wilson Memorial pitcher Brandon Gochenour allowed Grayson County precious few scoring opportunities, and the Blue Devils could only capitalize on one of them, falling to the Hornets 6-1 Saturday at Radford University.

  • Devil win simple as 1-2-3

HONAKER –– Grayson County carried a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning of its Group A Division 2 state baseball quarterfinal Tuesday due in large part to a series of outstanding defensive plays. When a few late clunkers allowed Honaker to pull back to within striking distance, it only served to set up one last gem of a play.

  • Tide on wrong end of classic

WYTHEVILLE –– The politically correct and thus more palatable term favored by the VHSL is ‘sudden victory’ overtime. It all depends upon one’s perspective. Radford could certainly go along with the categorization, Galax would strongly disagree.
