  • Collegians enjoy strong season

EMORY –– Kim Caudill, a senior at Emory & Henry College, has been named to the Spring 2012 StellarOne Sportsmanship team for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

  • Second half all Cavaliers

DUBLIN –– It was appropriate that on a date like 12/12/12, a couple of 12-point surges made all the difference.

Hanging on to a six-point lead early in the third quarter Wednesday, Carroll County twice scored 12 unanswered points and left the Cougars in the dust, rolling to a 70-40 nondistrict win to remain unbeaten on the year.

  • Cavaliers end long dry spell

HILLSVILLE –– In their one and only meeting last year, Galax and Carroll County swapped the lead 20 times before the Maroon Tide pulled away late to take its 16th straight win.

Thursday, one lead change was all it took.

Carroll County built a 10-point lead on its first bucket of the second quarter, eventually expanded its lead to 21 points and never allowed the Maroon Tide within 14 the rest of the way, taking a 48-31 nondistrict win in a noisy, energetic packed house.

  • Cockerham finishes with a bang

EMORY –– Jamie Cockerham wrapped up one of the most successful careers ever for an Emory & Henry volleyball player by being named to the all-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) first team recently.

Cockerham, a senior outside hitter and a former four-year letter winner at Galax High School, finished her career as the holder of two school records at E&H and with a share of an ODAC record.

  • Galax clamps down on Indians

Limited in practice time due to an extended run in volleyball, Galax buckled down defensively and mustered enough offense to get the job done Friday night, opening its girls’ basketball season with a 42-28 nondistrict win over Rural Retreat.

  • 2012-2013 Twin County BOYS’...

Having lost 10 of 13 players from a team that won its second straight Division 1 state championship, GALAX is easily the least experienced of the three Twin County boys’ basketball teams. But that doesn’t mean the Maroon Tide doesn’t know how to win.

Galax coach Verl Brown will have at his services the bulk of a two-time district champion junior varsity squad, but how that JV success carries over to the varsity level remains to be seen. Varsity experience is virtually nonexistent on the 2012-13 Maroon Tide roster.

  • Tigers too tough for Tide

HONAKER –– Galax was able to absorb a quick 1-2 punch by Honaker at the outset of its Western Section Division 1 second-round game. A similar salvo by the Tigers to close the first half proved to be too much to overcome.

Honaker had two touchdowns before Galax had three offensive snaps, and the Tigers added two scores 16 seconds apart just before the half to advance with a 42-14 win Saturday at Fuller Field.

The Western Section’s No. 1 seed, Honaker (11-1) will host No. 5 J.I. Burton (9-3) in the state quarterfinals this weekend.

  • Galax stopped in semifinals

RICHMOND –– Galax was able to bounce back from a throwaway set in its Group A Division 1 quarterfinal match. The Maroon Tide couldn’t repeat the feat in the state semifinals.

Tied at one set apiece, Galax managed just 15 points in the third set and 16 in the fourth as Luray ended the Maroon Tide’s season with a 25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 25-16 decision in the second semifinal Friday afternoon at VCU’s Siegel center.

  • Scrappy Tide scrapes by Eagles

CLINCHPORT –– Having reached the state volleyball quarterfinals three straight years now, Galax knows that the northeasterly route to the final four in Richmond is a circuitous one. It starts with a three-hour excursion in the opposite direction.

  • Grayson grounds Hawks

INDEPENDENCE –– A new champion will be crowned in Group A Division 2 this year. It may or may not be Grayson County, but the Blue Devils made sure there would be no repeat by Gretna.

Eighth-seeded Grayson took a commanding 31-7 halftime lead and fought off second half rally by the No. 9 Hawks, holding on for a 44-31 win in the Western Section Division 2 playoffs Friday at Bill Strong Field.
