DUBLIN –– It was appropriate that on a date like 12/12/12, a couple of 12-point surges made all the difference.

Hanging on to a six-point lead early in the third quarter Wednesday, Carroll County twice scored 12 unanswered points and left the Cougars in the dust, rolling to a 70-40 nondistrict win to remain unbeaten on the year.

EMORY –– Jamie Cockerham wrapped up one of the most successful careers ever for an Emory & Henry volleyball player by being named to the all-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) first team recently.

Cockerham, a senior outside hitter and a former four-year letter winner at Galax High School, finished her career as the holder of two school records at E&H and with a share of an ODAC record.

Having lost 10 of 13 players from a team that won its second straight Division 1 state championship, GALAX is easily the least experienced of the three Twin County boys’ basketball teams. But that doesn’t mean the Maroon Tide doesn’t know how to win.

Galax coach Verl Brown will have at his services the bulk of a two-time district champion junior varsity squad, but how that JV success carries over to the varsity level remains to be seen. Varsity experience is virtually nonexistent on the 2012-13 Maroon Tide roster.

RICHMOND –– Galax was able to bounce back from a throwaway set in its Group A Division 1 quarterfinal match. The Maroon Tide couldn’t repeat the feat in the state semifinals.

Tied at one set apiece, Galax managed just 15 points in the third set and 16 in the fourth as Luray ended the Maroon Tide’s season with a 25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 25-16 decision in the second semifinal Friday afternoon at VCU’s Siegel center.
