  • G-Men break Grayson’s heart

    BLUEFIELD –– Double overtime was doubly cruel this time around.

    Playing two extra sessions for the second time in three games, Grayson County was eliminated one win short of a state tournament berth after a 77-75 loss to Graham in the Region C Division 2 semifinals Friday on the G-Men’s home floor.

    Graham (18-7) advanced to Saturday’s championship game to meet Radford (24-2), a 58-51 winner over Glenvar in the first semifinal.

  • Cavaliers survive Warriors

    HILLSVILLE –– Gunnar Beamer and Corey Kellam put on a great game of h-o-r-s-e in the first quarter. Carroll County and Magna Vista put on a great show all night.

    After leading for most of the night, Carroll County found itself against the ropes with time winding down but held Magna Vista to three points the final five minutes, rallying from a five-point deficit to survive with a 59-57 win in the Region IV Division 4 semifinals.

  • Home school sports bill sacked...

    RICHMOND – Down goes Tebow.
    The bill, that is.
    Legislation to let home schooled students join public school sports teams was defeated Feb. 14 in the Senate Education and Health Committee, where similar bills have failed in previous years.
    The perennial proposal from Del. Rob Bell (R-Albemarle County) would achieve that by prohibiting public schools from joining an interscholastic governing body, such as the Virginia High School League, that bars home schoolers from public school sports.

  • A hair-razing season for CCIS

    HILLSVILLE –– There is probably a good number of 8th-grade girls’ basketball coaches walking around at various schools out there today with less hair than they possessed when they started the job, either due pulling it out themselves or by having it leave of its own volition.

    Carroll County’s 8th-grade girls certainly caused their coach to lose his hair, albeit all at once, and on a completely voluntary basis.

  • Devil girls add tourney title

    MAX MEADOWS –– Mountain Empire District regular season champion Grayson County starts four sophomores, and for the longest time Friday night, it showed. The Blue Devils also start some talented kids with 40-plus games of varsity competition under their belts. That showed when it mattered most.

    Grayson County shook off a sluggish, tentative start and finished with a flourish, validating its season title by zooming past Galax 52-41 for the MED girls’ tournament title at Fort Chiswell.

  • Carroll Special Olympians host...

    HILLSVILLE –– Despite the snowfall that coated area roads last Saturday, conditions improved enough to allow the Carroll County Special Olympics Basketball Classic to go on as planned at Carroll County Intermediate School.

    A crowd of nearly 250 came to show support as the team took the floor. The Carroll County Junior ROTC provided the color guard while Krista Neely sang the National Anthem.

  • Cavs pound Dogs to go 21-1

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County put the finishing touches on one of the most remarkable regular seasons in school history and capped a second straight Southwest District championship Friday with an 85-55 dismantling of Tazewell.

    The Cavalier senior class was honored beforehand, then commenced to win its 40th ballgame in two years, wrapping up a perfect run through the SWD for a second year in a row.

    After a subpar showing in a three-point win Tuesday at Marion, Carroll finished with wins on consecutive nights by a combined 68 points.

  • Grayson survives Tide scare

    A 3-14 record at this point in the season would have been a little more palatable for Galax if one of those wins happened to be over archrival and Mountain Empire District-leading Grayson County.

    As it was, the Blue Devils, who took the last meeting by 20 points, kept their unblemished district record intact and Galax had to settle for another ‘close but not quite’ kind of night.

  • Devils in the zone against G-Men

    UPDATE: The Grayson County-Galax quad scheduled for tonight (Feb. 1) will be played, although the starting time for the first game has been moved up one hour to 3:30.

     

    BLUEFIELD –– Grayson County boys’ basketball coach Lucas Austin couldn’t recall the last time – if ever – that his team played 32 minutes of zone defense. A necessity more so than a strategy due to the absence of two starters, the Blue Devils’ static defensive set made a strong case for future employment on Wednesday.

  • Cavs 17-0 after 30-point third

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County basketball fans know it’s coming, or at least they think they do. More times than not, they’re right.

    In winning its 17th game without a loss – the best start in school history – Carroll County once again did what it has already done so many times this year. One minute the Cavaliers will be in a battle. Two or four or eight minutes later, they’re sitting atop a 20-point lead.
