  • Tide rallies past Buffs again

The season opener between Galax and Floyd County two weeks ago was an exercise in efficiency, with just an hour and 51 minutes needed to complete Galax’s tidy 3-1 win.

Floyd County batted for what seemed like at least that much time in a single half-inning in the two teams’ rematch Monday, while Galax’s final turn at bat never did end.

  • Carroll teen wins Ironman...

ZION CROSSROADS ––    Cherokee Widner of Sylvatus was crowned the 2013 national champion at the Ironman Nationals lifting competition, held at the Best Western Crossroads on March 17.

The event was sanctioned by the 100% RAW Powerlifting Federation, and the competition took place without any aids other than a weight belt and wrist straps.

  • Galax girls rally for first win

Lauren Osborne’s one-out single in the bottom of the eighth drove in Taylor Ashworth with the winning run as Galax edged Chilhowie 6-5 in a nondistrict softball game Thursday at Mountain View Park.

Galax broke into the win column with its first victory after an 0-3 start.

  • Big finish leads Cavs past Tide

As the afternoon wore on and the temperatures gradually dropped, Carroll County’s bats only got hotter.

The Cavaliers racked up 13 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break away from a one-run lead going on to hammer Galax 17-3 in six innings in a nondistrict game Friday at Felts Park.

Galax (1-3) just had put three runs on the board to pull to within 4-3 when the Cavaliers (3-0) batted through the order in consecutive innings to blow the game open.

  • DOWNLOAD: Sports Page 6 for 3/20...

Readers of our print edition might have noticed something strange in today's (3/20/13) paper.

A production error at our printing operation in Roanoke replaced our page 6 with a page 6 from the Collegiate Times, the Virginia Tech student newspaper.

    Our online edition was correct.

  • Tide makes most of last chance

FLOYD –– A gloriously beautiful weekend gave way to a dreary, chilly Monday, but the nippy and overcast start to the new week provided something that was lacking under the warm blue skies of a day before.

    They’re playing baseball again.

A young Galax took its time getting the bats going but finally strung together a rally in its final turn at bat, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to overcome Floyd County for a 3-1 nondistrict win in the season opener for both schools.

  • Fruitless venture for Carroll...

SALEM –– Nobody walked into the Salem Civic Center dressed as a tropical fruit or a garden vegetable Saturday. Fittingly, the huge following that came to witness Carroll County’s first state tournament appearance in 22 years never got a chance to go nuts.

A dry spell that encompassed nearly two full quarters subdued the Cavalier faithful, stymied Carroll’s offense and propelled E.C. Glass to the Group AA Division 4 semifinals after a 61-46 quarterfinal win late Saturday night.

  • From poorhouse to penthouse

HILLSVILLE –– It doesn’t seem like that long ago to those who experienced it firsthand.

Carroll County’s most recent venture to the state tournament in 1991 seems like just a few years back to those who followed the Cavaliers then. Even the back-to-back region championship teams in 1979 and 1980, there’s no way those guys are in their 50s now.

But on the other hand, the gap between today and three years ago may as well be an eternity.

  • Cavaliers reign in Region IV

HILLSVILLE –– Salem was as well-prepared to face Carroll County as any team the Cavaliers have played this year. But nobody was prepared to see Cody Keith go off the way he did.

A dynamic 6-foot-2 junior forward, Carroll County’s sixth man hit every shot he put up, scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed team highs with six rebounds and four steals as the Cavaliers used a dominant fourth quarter to claim a 66-48 win in the Region IV Division 4 finals Saturday night.

  • G-Men break Grayson’s heart

BLUEFIELD –– Double overtime was doubly cruel this time around.

Playing two extra sessions for the second time in three games, Grayson County was eliminated one win short of a state tournament berth after a 77-75 loss to Graham in the Region C Division 2 semifinals Friday on the G-Men’s home floor.

Graham (18-7) advanced to Saturday’s championship game to meet Radford (24-2), a 58-51 winner over Glenvar in the first semifinal.
