  • Blue Devils get jump on MED

Galax played catch-up with Grayson County until there was too much ‘up’ to catch. Now the rest of the district as a whole is left trying to reel in the Blue Devils.

Unable to handle the prosperity of an early pair of two-run innings, Grayson County finally separated itself with a six-run outburst in the fourth Friday and took a 10-6 win over the Maroon Tide at Felts Park.

  • Devils squeak past Floyd

INDEPENDENCE –– They call 1-0 ballgames “pitchers’ duels,” and this one certainly fit into that category. But pitchers’ duels would never end unless somebody hit and somebody fielded. Grayson County got just enough of both.

A key pair of hits gave the Blue Devils the game’s only run in the fifth inning, and the lone score was able to stand up thanks in part to some fine defensive efforts behind a shutout performance by pitcher Sarah Eller in a 1-0 trimming of Floyd County Thursday at the Grayson County Rec Park.

  • Cavaliers earn sweep of Tide

HILLSVILLE –– Galax was unable to get the go-ahead hit it needed in the first game of its double-header at Carroll County. The Cavaliers made sure the opportunity didn’t arise again.

Carroll scored on a walk-off single to nip the Tide 5-4, then used a no-hitter by Ryan Gravley to secure a 3-0 win and claim a nondistrict sweep Saturday at Bill Worrell Field.

  • Blue Devils rally for first win

INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County may have been thinking that the final out would never happen. Carroll County must have thought the bottom of the sixth would never end.

Grayson rallied for seven runs in the home half of the sixth then sweated through a Carroll comeback attempt before holding on for its first win of the year, a 9-8 thriller Thursday at Grayson National Bank Park.

  • Late goal staves off Tide loss

Galax’s boys overcame a quick two-goal deficit and were able to salvage a draw with Pulaski County while the Maroon Tide girls dropped a 2-1 decision to the Cougars in a pair of nondistrict soccer matches Wednesday at Galax High School.

The Maroon Tide boys (1-1-1) found themselves down two goals after just 21 minutes of play but used a late goal in each half by Junior Espinosa to avoid a second loss to the Cougars (2-0-2).

  • Tide, Cavaliers lead post-season...

It’s no secret that, collectively, the three local high schools gave the Twin County area its most successful basketball season in recent memory, perhaps ever.

That fact was not lost on those outside of the area, either.

District postseason honors in both boys’ and girls’ basketball were swept by Galax and Carroll County, while Galax’s boys and Carroll’s girls took home player and coach of the year awards in their respective regions.

  • Tide goes out a winner

RICHMOND –– “They know how to win,” said Galax coach Verl Brown in the postgame media room.

    Boy, do they ever.

Galax capped an incredible four-year run Friday that has brought some of its seniors as many state championship rings as a hand has fingers. The latest bling comes courtesy of a second straight state basketball championship as the Maroon Tide ran away from Amelia County 66-49 in the Group A Division 1 title game at the Siegel Center.

  • Millbrook ends Cavs’ season

RICHMOND –– Carroll County’s seniors took their girls’ basketball program where it has never been before.  Millbrook did what it has done 104 times since its seniors were freshmen.

The Pioneers set a new Virginia High School League record with their 79th consecutive victory, holding the Cavaliers to three points in the game’s first 12 minutes and 19 seconds and breezing to a 65-31 win in the Group AA Division 4 state semifinals Tuesday at the Siegel Center.

  • Cavs clamp down on Eagles

SALEM –– Carroll County has been fueled by a loud and energetic fan base and a remarkable series of defensive efforts on its run through the postseason, but none of the fans have yet waved the capital D and picket fence sign signifying ‘defense.’ Rightly so. The Cavaliers have been playing A+ fense.

Carroll County limited Staunton River to just 13 points through three quarters – zero in the third – and notched a 42-27 win in the Group AA Division 4 quarterfinals Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.

  • Galax moves on, by George

SALEM –– Deion George picked a fine time to put together his most complete game of the season. Partly for that reason, Galax’s season is not yet completed.

George had 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals – all team highs – and two blocks to lead the Maroon Tide past Castlewood 53-44 Friday in the Group A Division 1 quarterfinals at the Salem Civic Center. Galax (25-2) advances to Thursday’s state semifinals at VCU where it will face the winner of the Luray-Charles City quarterfinal, played Saturday.
