  • Nelson named first-team all-...

     EMORY –– Emory & Henry College junior tennis player Matt Nelson has been named first-team all-ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) at No. 1 doubles for the recently-completed 2012 season.

    Nelson, a former Galax High School standout and Group A doubles state champion, and teammate Adam Henderson (Abingdon) were two of four Emory & Henry players to pick up first- or second-team all-conference honors.

    Nelson and Henderson were a perfect 9-0 in conference play this season and were 17-2 overall.

  • Blue Devils rob Pioneers, 2-0

    MAX MEADOWS –– Grayson County’s Max Rodgers is doing everything he can to dispel the myth about rightfield being a place to hide the defense’s weak link.

    Playing rightfield because of his speed, range and arm, Rodgers robbed Fort Chiswell’s Makenzie Mabe with a spectacular catch at the fence on the final play of the day Friday as the Blue Devils nipped the Pioneers 2-0 in a crucial Mountain Empire District game.

  • Carroll-Tazewell game halted...

     

    TAZEWELL –– Carroll County was well on its way toward gaining ground in the tight Southwest District baseball race Tuesday night when an ugly incident forced the suspension of its game with Tazewell at Lou Peery Field.

    The Cavaliers were leading 3-0 in the top of the third inning when a play at the plate resulted in some shoving and pushing, a tackle or two and both benches clearing, resulting in a large scuffle between the plate and the backstop.

  • Crawford drives Devils to win

    INDEPENDENCE –– Forget the ‘designated’ part of the description. The ‘hitter’ part of it certainly applied.

    Grayson County DH Daniel Crawford went 3-for-3 with three doubles and a whopping seven RBIs Friday as the Blue Devils torched Graham 17-0 in a Mountain Empire District game.

    Grayson County got out from under .500 for the first time this year, evening its record at 6-6 overall, and remained unbeaten in district play at 4-0. Graham dropped to 4-4 overall, 2-2 in the MED.

  • Rush grabs state runner-up finish

     The State Line Rush girls’ homeschool basketball team of Galax finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 24-18, finishing second in the Virginia Homeschool Athletic Association state tournament in Fairfax and competing in the East Coast National Tournament at Liberty University in March.

  • GHS senior organizes benefit...

     A senior project at Galax High School proved to be a big success on April 14, as Allison White organized and carried out the Jimmy Cockerham Scholarship Fund Volleyball Tournament.  Twelve teams entered the tournament and more than 100 people attended. The winning team consisted of Tim Burton, Ashley Surber, Cindy Rudy, Steve Burcham, Robin Pack and Dennis Vass.

  • Blue Devils get jump on MED

    Galax played catch-up with Grayson County until there was too much ‘up’ to catch. Now the rest of the district as a whole is left trying to reel in the Blue Devils.

    Unable to handle the prosperity of an early pair of two-run innings, Grayson County finally separated itself with a six-run outburst in the fourth Friday and took a 10-6 win over the Maroon Tide at Felts Park.

  • Devils squeak past Floyd

    INDEPENDENCE –– They call 1-0 ballgames “pitchers’ duels,” and this one certainly fit into that category. But pitchers’ duels would never end unless somebody hit and somebody fielded. Grayson County got just enough of both.

    A key pair of hits gave the Blue Devils the game’s only run in the fifth inning, and the lone score was able to stand up thanks in part to some fine defensive efforts behind a shutout performance by pitcher Sarah Eller in a 1-0 trimming of Floyd County Thursday at the Grayson County Rec Park.
