  • Galax erupts on Fort Chiswell

MAX MEADOWS –– For the second straight week, Galax followed up a dominant first-half performance with a second half that was, well, not so much. This time around the first half effort was plenty enough to bring home a win at the end of the day.

  • Spartans outslug Galax

Galax came out of its corner and punched Giles squarely in the nose by scoring 23 points in the first quarter, and the Maroon Tide had put up more points by halftime – 30 – than the Spartans have allowed in a game all season. But Giles hasn’t won 20 consecutive outings, one of them a state title game, by having a glass jaw.

  • Vaughan wins C39 title; Devils,...

GALAX –– Jacob Vaughan wasn’t extremely happy with himself when he walked off the 18th green Monday at Blue Ridge Country Club. Fortunately, the Grayson County senior was miffed about his second-to-last shot of the day. His round in general turned out to be plenty solid.

  • REMEMBER WHEN: September 21-27

Two long scoring plays were the difference as Galax snapped an 0-4 skid to start the season with  13-0 win at Craig County. Deion George hauled in a 58-yard TD pass and Jordan Vaughan added a 31-yard scoring run.

Dillon Caviness scored three rushing touchdowns as Carroll County ran past Grayson County 25-6. Zack Surratt added an 85-yard kickoff return for a Cavalier score.

  • Cougars diverse in Carroll win

HILLSVILLE –– With several athletes on its roster capable of going the distance if given enough of a crease, Pulaski County has more than its share of home run hitters at its disposal. A three-run jack was about the only way the Cougars didn’t score Friday night at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Britt, Wooten win club...

Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C., held off two other golfers to win the 51st Annual Blue Ridge Country Club Invitational recently.

Britt fired a 5-under par 65 on Saturday and 67 on Sunday for a 132 total. Second place went to Brock Cox of Galax with rounds of 68-65–133 and third place to Brad Chambers of Galax, with rounds of 66-68–134.

Other golfers winning the different flights included:

  • Glenvar powers past Grayson

SALEM –– A lot has to go right for an 0-3 team to enter a 3-0 team’s stadium and walk out with a victory. Most of what went right, though, went in the home team’s favor.

Glenvar bolted to a 34-0 halftime lead and was the benefactor of most of the happy plays Friday night as the Highlanders blanked Grayson County 51-0 in a nondistrict matchup at Highlander Stadium.

  • Charges against former Carroll...

WYTHEVILLE — A prosecutor has dropped all charges against a former football coach, teacher and administrator with Carroll County schools. The charges stemmed from a “hazing” incident involving an 11th grade football player.

Howard S. Ingo, a former George Wythe High School football coach, was convicted in May of a “corporal punishment” violation, a Class 4 misdemeanor, and ordered to pay a fine of $100. He appealed the conviction.

  • Blue Ridge ladies hold member-...
