  • Tide defensive in rout of TV

It’s an over-used cliche that the best defense is a good offense. For Galax Friday, at least in the early going, its best offense was an opportunistic defense.

The Maroon Tide’s defensive and special teams units outscored its offense in a 35-point first quarter, quickly ending any hopes of a major upset by Twin Valley as No. 3 Galax trounced the No. 14 Panthers 52-7 in a Region 1A West first-round game at Galax High School.

Carroll County earned its 16th straight region tournament appearance by sweeping the Southwest District volleyball tournament with 3-0 wins over Richlands and Tazewell.

Galax broke open a tight game with 21 second-half points and ended its season with a 35-6 win over Narrows. Jordan Vaughan rushed for 197 yards and a pair of scores for the Maroon Tide.

  • Galax stopped one win short

MARION –– The Region 1A West volleyball semifinals were moved almost at the last minute from Rye Cove High School in deep Southwest Virginia to Marion Senior High. The switch sure saved a lot of time getting there, but the ride home was undoubtedly still a long one for Galax.

  • Maroon Tide rolls to 38-0 win

Grayson County spent the first two quarters one play away from making it anybody’s ballgame. Galax spent the third quarter four plays away from adding another nail to the Blue Devils’ coffin.

After struggling to take a 7-0 lead into the half, Galax exploded for 24 quick-strike third-quarter points, zooming away to a 38-0 win over Grayson in the final regular season game for both teams.

Grayson County outgained Narrows 347-65 in a 35-7 win over the Green Wave. Seven Blue Devils combined for 194 rushing yards and Ethan Hash threw for another 153 yards.

  • McGrady hits K1K in Devil win

RICHLANDS – Camryn McGrady was batting .500 after her first two hitting attempts Tuesday night. But she was hitting 1,000.

After coming up one kill shy of quadruple digits on senior night in the regular season finale against Graham, the Grayson County middle hitter reached the magic number with her initial kill on Tuesday, helping lead the Blue Devils to an easy – if not picturesque – three-set win over the G-Girls in the Conference 39 semifinals at Richlands High School.

Carroll County scored five touchdowns in its first 23 plays, hammering Grundy 42-14. Five different Cavaliers had at least one TD each, including Ulisis Moreno, who scored twice and was 6-of-6 on PATs.

Covington rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter, driving 77 yards in the final four minutes for a 30-26 win over Galax.

Grayson County attempted its first PAT kick in more than two years, and Mario Ruiz’s boot was true as the Blue Devils nipped Bland County 7-6.

  • Blue Devils hammer Graham

If sets were doughnuts, Camryn McGrady would have gained about 50 pounds Tuesday night. As it was, the Grayson County senior came up just a tad light.

  • Remember When: October 19-25

     2009

Carroll County survived a last-second field goal attempt to edge Marion 14-13. Carroll got a defensive score but was held to 6 rushing yards and two first downs in the first half, finally taking the lead on Blake Bowman’s 21-yard pass to Jonathan Snow. Marion completed eight passes to move from its own 6 to the Carroll 27 in the final two minutes before missing a 45-yard field goal attempt.

  • Carroll County-Galax alumni...
