RADFORD –– Carroll County Special Olympics spent a very windy but sunny Saturday at Radford University’s Cupp Stadium on April 20 for the Annual Area 9 Spring Games. They competed in track and field events against teams from Mount Rogers Wythe IDC, Mount Rogers Twin Co IDC, Carroll House, NRV IDA, Pulaski County, and the Southwestern Virginia Training Center.

Radford City police officers participated in opening ceremonies and CCSO athlete LaRae Hall led everyone in the Special Olympics oath.

 DeFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. –– Sylvatus teenager Cherokee Widner won two national championships and was the runner-up for a third title at the American Powerlifting Association’s RAW national championships.

At 14 years of age and 133 pounds, Widner was the youngest and lightest competitor and entered the 148-pound lightweight teenager division for full powerlifting, bench press single lift and deadlift single lift.

GREENVILLE, S.C. –– Med-Fit Systems (Nautilus) sponsored three teams competing in a 3.5-mile Mud Run this past weekend, and one of the three teams brought home a first-place finish in its division.

“2 Hot Chicks and 2 Ugly Dudes” placed 19th overall and first in the co-ed division of the annual Goodwill Mud Run on April 13-14.

The team was captained by Med-Fit project manager and former Gazette reporter Ben Bomberger, with teammates Brandon Davis (Med-Fit IT director), Tracy Snow and Kyla Ford.

The first four innings Monday were all that Galax could have hoped for. The final three innings were more than Cheyenne Strickland could have dreamed of. 

Galax battled Carroll County evenly until the fifth inning, when Strickland launched the first of her three home runs as the Cavaliers exploded for a 22-3 nondistrict win at Mountain View Park.
