    Carroll County scored five touchdowns in its first 23 plays, hammering Grundy 42-14. Five different Cavaliers had at least one TD each, including Ulisis Moreno, who scored twice and was 6-of-6 on PATs.

    Covington rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter, driving 77 yards in the final four minutes for a 30-26 win over Galax. 

    Grayson County attempted its first PAT kick in more than two years, and Mario Ruiz’s boot was true as the Blue Devils nipped Bland County 7-6.

    Carroll County survived a last-second field goal attempt to edge Marion 14-13. Carroll got a defensive score but was held to 6 rushing yards and two first downs in the first half, finally taking the lead on Blake Bowman’s 21-yard pass to Jonathan Snow. Marion completed eight passes to move from its own 6 to the Carroll 27 in the final two minutes before missing a 45-yard field goal attempt.

     The Carroll County High School boys’ basketball program will host a Carroll vs. Galax alumni basketball game at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 at CCHS as a fundraisier for the team.

  • Fort rides quick start to win

    MAX MEADOWS –– Grayson County settled down after a disastrous start but was never able to fully recover after spotting Fort Chiswell an early two-touchdown lead, falling 29-7 to the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game Friday at C.F. McKinney Stadium.

  • Galax 5K has been running 25...

    Blue skies with puffy clouds and a crisp wind characterized the weather for the 25th Annual Twin County Regional Healthcare Galax Autumn Days 5K Run last Saturday.

    The race, which started and ended in Felts Park, with a circuit extending through part of downtown Galax, drew past competitors and new entrants. After registering and receiving number tags, the runners awaited the race eagerly.

  • CCMS sets goal for new soccer...

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County School Board is considering a request for a soccer program for Carroll County Middle School.

    Information about the potential program was presented by Dr. Mark Burnette, who turned the floor over to middle school principal Marc Quesenberry at the school board’s Oct. 14 meeting.

  • Blue Devils pick up steam

    INDEPENDENCE –– These guys have found something.

    After an 0-5 start, Grayson County won its second straight game Friday night at Bill Strong Field and used the same formula that has seen the Blue Devils play  well for three weeks straight, this time resulting in a 32-6 homecoming win over Bland County.

    Getting the O-fer off their backs has been nice, said Blue Devil coach Brett McPherson.

    Grayson County scored twice on safeties in the first half, providing the difference in a 16-14 win over Galax. The win snapped the Blue Devils’ 17-game losing streak.

    Carroll County attempted one pass while rushing for 360 yards, including 183 by Dillon Caviness, in a 26-7 win at Abingdon.

  • Galax scrambles for second

    ABINGDON –– After the opening round of the Group 1A state golf tournament Monday at Glenrochie Country Club, the big question was whether George Wythe, having played lights-out since August, could come back Tuesday and overcome a six-stroke deficit to first-day leader William Campbell.

    The Maroons couldn’t gobble up its six-stroke gap, but Galax certainly did.
