  • Blue Devils find the ‘zone
  • Prep Classic raises curtain

DRAPER –– It’s official: the 2015-16 high school sports season is underway. And has been the case in recent years, the first taste of competition for the three area high schools has been the Draper Valley Prep Classic.

  • Nester commits to N.C State

HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County pitcher Sydney Nester has barely advanced past her first year of high school, but the 15-year-old phenom is pretty certain where she wants to be in her first year in college.

Nester, the hard-throwing freshman who helped lead the Cavaliers to the Group 4A state softball championship June 13, made a verbal commitment to attend North Carolina State, capping a three-week period of time that has been nothing short of the stuff of dreams.

  • Scholarship to benefit Grayson...

Taylor Pauley’s dream was to some day play in the major leagues. In his memory, hopes are that countless Grayson County boys will get a boost playing in their local leagues.

  • Carroll duo headline all-4A team

Rick Nester is a lifelong baseball man who has been coaching varsity softball for three years. Sydney Nester is a ninth-grader who has been playing varsity softball for all of three months.

Both have found their relatively new surroundings much to their liking.

Though the two Nesters aren’t related genetically, they are inexorably linked competitively, having been named the Group 4A state player of the year and coach of the year, as announced this week by the Virginia High School League.

  • First time, second to none

LYNCHBURG –– To the discerning reader, a box score can carry a wealth of information. With a bit of help from the mind’s eye, two inches of small print can paint a pretty basic picture of how a particular game played out.

  • Carroll, Galax win state...

Complete coverage of state championship results will appear online and in Wednesday’s print edition.

LYNCHBURG –– So this is what it feels like.

Carroll County won the first state championship in a team sport in the school’s 46-year history Saturday, squeaking past defending champion Woodgrove 1-0 in the Group 4A title game at Liberty University’s Kamphius Field.

  • Finally, the finals

LYNCHBURG –– Carroll County softball coach Rick Nester found himself in quite the quandary after his team’s 3-2 win Friday over Deep Creek in the Group 4A state softball semifinals. His Cavaliers played their way into Saturday’s 10 a.m. state title game, and his son had wooed himself into a wedding scheduled months beforehand for later in Saturday afternoon.

Somebody in Carroll County was going to get a ring Saturday. The only question was, how many somebodies?

  • Giant killers

INDEPENDENCE –– Late last week, after Grayson County had claimed its first-ever region championship trophy in boys’ tennis, Blue Devil coach Jim Carter said that winning the region was his team’s No.1 goal this season.

A lot can change in four days.
