  • Cavs upset in SWD semis

    HILLSVILLE –– Scoring opportunities like the one Tazewell wasted in the first inning against Carroll County have been few and far between in games between the two this year.

    The Bulldogs didn’t blow their second chance.

    Having come up empty despite three first-inning singles, Tazewell pushed four runs across in a decisive third-inning rally and went on to shut out the Cavaliers 5-0 in the Southwest District softball semifinals Tuesday at CCHS.

  • MED BASEBALL POSTPONED

     The Mountain Empire District baseball tournament has been postponed for another day after Wednesday's heavy rains rendered the Felts Park field unplayable for Thursday.

    Grayson County and Fort Chiswell will pick up play at 2 p.m. with Grayson leading 3-0 in the bottom of the second. The Galax-Narrows semifinal will follow.

    The finals will be played Saturday, time TBA, if Grayson wins its semifinal. If Fort Chiswell wins, the finals will be played Friday.

  • Falcons quiet Cavs for title

    HILLSVILLE –– Three weeks ago, scoring a pair of runs was enough for Carroll County to hand Abingdon its only Southwest District baseball loss of the season. In the rematch, two wouldn’t do.

    Cody Hahn slammed the door shut on the Cavaliers with the Falcon’s holding a 3-2 lead, and Abingdon pulled away to a 5-2 win, clinching the SWD season title Friday at Bill Worrell Field.

    Carroll County could have forced a playoff for the season championship with a win, but will have to settle for the No. 2 spot in this week’s SWD tournament.

  • Injured wrestler still fighting...

    Luke Hampton, an Alleghany County wrestler paralyzed after his spine was injured during a match, is now running his own business and training young grapplers. On Sunday, a free concert in Sparta, N.C., will benefit Alleghany Special Olympics in honor of Hampton.

  • Cavaliers blank Tazewell

    HILLSVILLE –– As the only two seniors on the Carroll County softball team, Autumn Hill and Ragan Halsey anchor the Cavaliers in a figurative manner. They do so in a more literal sense as the team’s first and third basemen and its No. 3 and 4 hitters.

    Situated in between the two on the diamond, and in the middle of it all Tuesday, was freshman pitcher Gracie Davidson.

    The young Carroll right-hander shut down Tazewell on three hits, striking out nine and walking two as the Cavaliers claimed a 6-0 Southwest District win.

  • Devils, Tide start busy week

    As far as Monday – and only Monday – is concerned, Grayson County’s 5-2 win over Galax was of great importance, a hard-fought win by the Blue Devils over their fellow co-leader in the Mountain Empire District baseball standings.

    But as far as the week as a whole is concerned, “a man’s week,” according to Grayson coach Mike Worrell, Monday’s outcome may turn out to not matter a whit to either team by Saturday evening.

  • Fridley, Brown top Dannelly field

    One of the more popular running events among Twin County and regional athletes had a distinctly local flavor at the awards presentation Saturday.

    Runners hailing from Galax filled the top three overall female finishing positions and two of the top three male spots at the New River Trail-Dr. Ed Dannelly 10K run, sponsored by the Galax Recreation Department and held on the New River Trail State Park.

  • Tide refocuses to go 13-0

    INDEPENDENCE –– If ever a soccer team needed to burn a timeout to break the momentum of an opponent’s run, it was Galax late in the first half Thursday against Grayson County.

    Of course in soccer there is no such thing as a timeout, so Maroon Tide coach Troy Barkley just left it up to his seniors.

    Having seen a two-goal lead disappear in the span of four minutes, Galax regrouped and scored twice in the final three minutes of the first half and went on to a 5-2 win over the Blue Devils at Bill Strong Field.

  • Houk earns honors at Emory

    Tyler Houk, a Galax High School graduate and the son of Don and Rose Houk, received two awards at the Emory & Henry College awards day convocation on April 14.

    Houk was presented an award for being the Outstanding Senior in Physical Education, and an Exceptional Student Teaching in Physical Education award.

    Houk also played four years of football for Emory & Henry, and will graduate on May 4.
