  • Patrick spoils Galax comeback

    SPARTA, N.C. –– It’s not exactly the halfway point of the season, but with district play looming, the Christmas break marks the point between when a team needs to get better and when it ought to be better.

    If Thursday is any indication, Galax is a lot closer to the latter than the former.

    Facing what has traditionally been one of the stronger programs in Region IV, the Maroon Tide overcame a double-digit Patrick County advantage in the fourth quarter to briefly take the lead, only to fall 54-49 at Alleghany High School.

  • Graham wins district preview

    MAX MEADOWS –– The good news for Grayson County was that the Blue Devils got an early look at a fellow contender for the Mountain Empire District boys’ basketball race. The good news ended there.

    Graham held Grayson County scoreless the final 2:41 and rallied late for a 75-72 win in the second round of the First Bank of Virginia Classic at Fort Chiswell High School.

  • Galax finally gets off the schneid

    Galax jumped out to an 11-point lead by the end of the first quarter and picked up its first win of the season, downing Alleghany, N.C. 57-36 in a nondistrict game Tuesday in Galax.

    The Maroon Tide (1-5) led 18-7 after eight minutes and took a 30-16 lead into the half.

    Chandler Quesenberry scored 12 points to lead the Tide while Darian Brown added 11.

    Fabian Santos paced the Trojans with 17 points.

  • Fast and furious, Devils 5-0

    INDEPENDENCE -- North Wilkes adjusted to the frenzied pace set by Grayson County and played evenly with the Blue Devils from that point on.

    By that time, however, it was far, far too late to make any difference in the outcome.

    Grayson played entirely too fast, too intensely and too well for the better part of the first half and used its 24-point halftime cushion to coast to the 67-52 win in a nondistrict boys’ basketball game Tuesday.

  • Grayson Co. saved by the bell

    WYTHEVILLE -- Halftime can be a wonderful thing. Winded players can catch their breath and grab and a cool cup of water, and fans can snag a bag of popcorn or check out the facilities.

    For Grayson County Thursday, halftime broke the momentum in what was shaping up to be an ugly night.

    Unable to do much of anything in the first half, the Blue Devils turned things around at intermission and dominated the final 16 minutes, racing away from Radford 55-43 in the Perry Coe Shootout at George Wythe High School.

  • Road to Wythe title ran through Carroll

     Random thoughts for your perusal…

    High school football season in Virginia ended a couple of weeks ago with six state championship games at three venues across the Commonwealth. In the first two years under the new Group A playoff format, Southwest Virginia has proven itself the big dog of small school football in the state.

    SWVA teams occupied both sidelines of the Division 1 title game at Salem Stadium for the second straight year, as George Wythe knocked off Honaker for the D1 crown a year after Galax and Clintwood met for the title.

  • UPDATE: Galax holiday basketball times, opponents

     Galax’s holiday basketball schedules have been updated to include opponents, times and dates for events in West Virginia and North Carolina.

    This Friday and Saturday the Maroon Tide boys will play at the Brush Fork Armory, located at 2915 Old Bramwell Rd., Bluefield, W.Va.

    Friday, the Maroon Tide will play Bluefield, W.Va. at 7:45 p.m. Galax will return to Brush Fork Armory on Saturday for a 5:45 game with Oak Hill, W.Va.

  • Massive quarter leads Grayson over Chilhowie

     INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County unleashed a 30-point barrage in the second quarter and squashed Chilhowie in the middle two periods of a 90-63 nondistrict win Friday night.

    Ty Cannaday did half of the damage for the Blue Devils in the monster second period, hitting five 3-pointers as Grayson County (4-0) turned a 19-12 lead into a 49-30 advantage by halftime.

    The Blue Devils outscored the Warriors a combined 56-35 in the second and third quarters to lead 75-47 going into the fourth.

  • Big start, big finish for Lady Cavs

    It wasn’t particularly odd that Carroll County scored the game’s first 13 points and finished with a 12-point win Friday, but rather that the Cavaliers had to come from behind to do so.

    Galax fell behind 13-0, battled back to briefly lead before halftime but couldn’t stop Rachel Sellers in the paint as the Cavaliers took a 46-34 nondistrict win over the Maroon Tide.

  • Carroll County falls short at Bassett

     BASSETT –– Carroll County came up just short again against one of the top girls’ teams in Timesland, falling to Bassett 51-50 in a nondistrict battle Monday night.

    The loss dropped the Cavaliers to 3-3 on the season, with the three defeats coming by an average of 3.6 points to teams ranked in the Roanoke Times preseason top five.
