  • Grayson County topples Trojans for 10th victory

    SPARTA, N.C. –– Grayson County rallied from a five-point fourth-quarter deficit and won going away, notching a 60-46 win over Alleghany, N.C. in a nondistrict girls’ game Monday.

    The Blue Devils (10-4) trailed 40-35 after three quarters before outscoring the Trojans 25-6 down the stretch.

    Madison Shupe led three Grayson County scorers in double figures with 20 points. Meredith Frost added 16 points and Camryn McGrady chipped in 14 for the Blue Devils.

    Alleghany was led by Mica Sprinkle with 20 points.

  • Late 3-pointer sinks Lady Cavaliers

    HILLSVILLE –– The 1,000th point of Britney Allen’s career came late in the second period. Her third assist of the day came when it really mattered.

    Leading a fast break with the score tied at 35, Allen kicked out to Makenley Davis and Davis swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer, lifting Richlands over Carroll County 38-35 Saturday in a crucial Southwest District girls’ game.

    The game-winning shot capped a 9-1 run over the final 2:50 for Richlands (9-2 overall, 2-1 district). Allen scored the first six of those points.

  • Cavs win, Devils fall to Floyd at Harman Classic

    FLOYD –– Carroll County built a 15-point lead by halftime and went on to defeat defending Division 3 state champion Christiansburg 59-50 Saturday in the Chance Harman Classic at Floyd County High School.

    The Cavaliers (11-0) bolted to a 20-7 lead after one quarter and took a 34-19 lead into halftime.

    Ryan Gravley scored 17 points to lead Carroll County, Cody Keith had 12 points and Connor Lundy added 10 points. Christiansburg (2-9) was paced by 19 points from Joey Augustin.

  • Carroll cold against Bassett

    HILLSVILLE –– At least Carroll County can’t chalk up Monday’s loss to  poor shot selection.

    The Cavaliers repeatedly got open looks right under the basket, but getting those chippies to fall was the problem as Bassett took advantage of an unusually cold shooting night by Carroll to get away with a 46-35 nondistrict win.

    Carroll County missed 21 times from under the bucket – more than half of those coming in the first quarter – and trailed by as many as 18 points before seeing a late charge run out of steam.

  • Cavaliers 13-0 after wins over Tazewell, Pulaski

    TAZEWELL –– Carroll County got off to a hot start but had to hold off a late Tazewell comeback attempt before pulling away for an 83-64 win in a Southwest District boys’ game Tuesday.

    The Cavaliers remained unbeaten on the year at 12-0 and improved to 2-0 in SWD play.

    Carroll knocked down five 3-pointers in the game’s first six minutes and crafted a 37-20 lead by halftime. Tazewell (6-7, 0-1) battled back and trailed just 48-42 late in the third quarter before the Cavaliers regained the momentum with a 14-0 run.

  • Fort Chiswell overpowers Tide

    MAX MEADOWS –– Galax took a slim lead into the second quarter before Fort Chiswell took over and the Pioneers pulled away for a 50-36 win in a Mountain Empire District boys’ game Tuesday.

    Galax (1-8 overall, 0-2 MED) opened the game by hitting five of its first 12 shots from the floor, including a putback by Chase Garvey to open the second quarter, giving the Maroon Tide a 12-8 lead. But Galax would miss its next 14 field goal attempts, a dry spell that would stretch into the midpoint of the third quarter.

  • Maroon Tide girls open MED with 15-point win

    Galax built a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter and gradually pulled away from Graham the rest of the evening, opening Mountain Empire District girls’ play with a 49-34 win Friday night.

    Paige Hanks hit three 3-pointers and led all scorers with 17 points for the Maroon Tide (6-5 overall, 1-0 district) while Carolyn Vaughan added 10 points.

    Emaleigh Gallinger led the G-Girls (6-5, 0-1) with 10 points.

  • Grayson fades in MED opener

    MAX MEADOWS –– Grayson County has looked like the team to beat as the Mountain Empire District girls’ basketball teams worked their way through the nondistrict portion of their schedules. The Blue Devils still very well may be that team, but they’re starting out in a hole.

    Fort Chiswell got it done from the foul line in the final minute and surprised Grayson County 67-59 Friday, opening MED play with a huge win.

  • Cavaliers rally past Bobcats for title

    MAX MEADOWS –– Carroll County had played deliberately for long enough, and picked just the right time to floor it. By the time Radford recovered, the Bobcats had gone from being in a tie ballgame to being in a double-digit hole.

    The sudden emergence of a full-court press helped Carroll County open the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run Saturday and the Cavaliers hit their free throws down the stretch to take down Radford 68-58 in the championship game of the First Bank of Virginia Classic at Fort Chiswell High School.

  • Carroll County girls shut down Magna Vista

     HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County held Magna Vista to 11 points over the final three quarters and pounded the Warriors 50-24 in a nondistrict girls’ game Friday.

    The Cavaliers (6-4) led 17-13 after the first quarter and blanked Magna Vista in the second period to take a 31-13 halftime lead.

    Ten different Cavaliers found their way into the scoring column, led by Machala Hash’s 12 points.
