  • Lady Blue Devils pick up pair of district victories

    BLAND –– Grayson County’s first point in the second quarter gave it enough for the win as the Blue Devil defense locked down on Bland County in a 47-16 Mountain Empire District win Wednesday at Bland High School.

    Grayson County limited the Bears to three points or fewer in each of the first three quarters, taking a 34-4 halftime lead.

  • Devil girls battle to keep No. 1

    Galax had a solid shot at throwing a wrench into the Mountain Empire District girls’ basketball race, but Grayson County ended the game on an 11-2 run, rallying for a 39-34 win in a back-and-forth affair Friday at Galax High School.

  • Carroll girls hand Tazewell first SWD loss

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County took a must-win game over Southwest District leader Tazewell Wednesday by holding the Bulldogs to 11 second-half points in the 45-38 victory.

    The Cavaliers (11-8 overall, 4-2 district) kept their district championship hopes alive by handing the Bulldogs (10-7, 4-1) their first SWD loss of the year.

    Taylor Martin scored 15 points and Crysta Guynn hit four 3-pointers and had 14 points for Carroll County, which pulled away from a 27-27 halftime deadlock.

    Nobody scored more than seven points for Tazewell.

  • Wythe pulls away from Galax

    WYTHEVILLE –– Baseball season is still a couple of months away, but Galax could use a closer right about now.

    For the second straight game the Maroon Tide found itself either tied or in the lead in the fourth quarter only to come up well short of its second win of the year, falling to George Wythe 60-49 in a nondistrict game Monday night.

  • Galax drops twin bill to Graham

    BLUEFIELD –– Graham took advantage of a cold shooting night by Galax and knocked the Maroon Tide girls out of a three-way tie for the Mountain Empire District lead with a 42-29 win Thursday night at Graham Middle School.

    The G-Girls (9-8 overall, 3-2 district) never trailed as Galax (10-7, 4-2) hit just a quarter of their field goal attempts.

    The Maroon Tide trailed 23-14 at halftime but Sydney Lindsey scored Galax’s first 10 points of the second half to pull the Tide to within 28-24.

  • Wrestlers in the homestretch

    INDEPENDENCE –– The four Mountain Empire District wrestling teams finished up the district portion of their regular season with a quad match Thursday at Grayson County, with Graham finishing with a 3-0 mark against Galax, Grayson and Fort Chiswell.

    Galax came away with a 2-1 team mark, Grayson was victorious over Fort, which went 0-3 on the night.

  • Tide breaks through for first MED win

    Galax snapped a seven-game slide and came away with its first district win of the year, rolling past Narrows 50-32 in a Mountain Empire District boys’ game Wednesday.

    The Maroon Tide (2-12 overall, 1-4 district) jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and took a 36-23 lead into the fourth quarter.

    Steven Peoples led all scorers with 12 points for Galax, which got scoring contributions from 10 players.

    Narrows (7-9, 0-5) was led by Rodney Perdue with 10 points.

  • VHSL shuffles state wrestling for 6A format

    With apologies -- but no regrets -- for the R.E.M. theft, it’s the end of the wrestling world as we know it (no reason not to feel fine).

    Bid farewell to the three Virginia High School League classifications and three state championship tournaments that have been the signature events of the sport in this state. This will be the last year under the current format of simultaneous Group A and AA meets Feb. 15-16 at the Salem Civic Center and AAA the same weekend at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake.

  • Grayson struggles to victory

    INDEPENDENCE –– Just how bad was Grayson County’s third quarter Friday? Despite putting up a goose egg, it was still slightly better than Galax’s first quarter.

    The Blue Devils overcame an eight-minute scoring drought to open the second half, hit just enough free throws to make the difference and handed Galax its first Mountain Empire District loss of the year, 29-26 Friday.

  • Devils battle past Galax

    INDEPENDENCE –– Galax gets an A for effort, but Grayson County still gets the W.

    Two days after a lackluster loss at Fort Chiswell, Galax played with intensity for the entire 32 minutes Friday but had no answer for Ty Cannaday, whose 27 points led the Blue Devils to a closer-than-it-sounds 70-50 Mountain Empire District win.

    Grayson County (9-4 overall, 3-0 district) kept pace with Graham atop the MED standings. Galax fell to 1-9, 0-3 with the loss, but not due to a lack of effort.
