  • Devils bounced in semis

BUCHANAN –– James River doesn’t have all the components still in place from last year’s Group A Division 2 state championship team. Friday, though, the Knights had more than enough to get the job done.

  • Maroon Tide rolls in regionals

Top-seeded Galax bolted to a 27-point halftime lead and claimed a 50-point win in the Region C Division 1 quarterfinals Wednesday in Galax, pounding Holston 78-28.

Galax (21-2) led 17-4 after eight minutes and widened the gap to 37-10 by halftime over the No. 8 Cavaliers (5-17).

Justin Hash (12 points), Austin Pack (11) and Jerad Brown (10) led a dozen Maroon Tide players in the scoring column. Tyler Smith’s 17 points were high for Holston.

  • Late surge sends Tide to semis

Determining the seeding for a regional girls’ basketball tournament may be an ambiguous process, but one thing seems clear:  a No. 7 needs more than three good quarters to get past a No. 2.

Second-seeded Galax came to life in the final eight minutes and put away a pesky Northwood 49-44 in the Region C Division 1 tournament Tuesday, advancing to Thursday’s semifinals and to within a win of a state tournament berth.

  • Maroon Tide falls short in MED finals upset bid

    By CRAIG WORRELL
    Sports Editor

In its bid to become the first Mountain Empire District team to hand Fort Chiswell a loss this year, Galax held the season champion Pioneers to just four second-half field goals on 22 attempts.
Unfortunately for the Maroon Tide, nobody has ever devised a solid plan for defending the free throw.
Fort Chiswell scored 15 of its 21 second-half points at the foul line, including 10-of-12 in crunch time, as the Pioneers held off a challenge from Galax to take a 58-54 win in the MED girls’ tournament championship game Friday.

  • Cavaliers survive Marion scare

HILLSVILLE –– Defeating a team three times in a season is plenty difficult. To beat a team twice in a single night is no easy task, either.

Carroll County seemingly put Marion away with a big third-quarter run but had to win the game again in the final seconds, finally subduing the Scarlet Hurricane 65-60 in a Southwest District tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

  • Galax, Grayson set up rematch

Justin Hash hit a career milestone  for Galax and Grayson County rallied to victory in the Mountain Empire District boys’ basketball semifinals Tuesday at Galax High School.

In the first semifinal, season champion Galax thumped fourth-seeded Bland County 87-60 as Hash topped the 1,000-point plateau for his career.

The Maroon Tide (19-2) wasted no time taking control over the Bears (8-15), jumping out to a 19-point lead as Austin Pack and Jerad Brown teamed up for 17 first-quarter points as Galax surged to a 27-8 lead.

  • Bears end Grayson girls’ season

BLAND –– Grayson County’s season ended with a 20th straight defeat as Bland County took a 47-27 win in the Mountain Empire District girls’ tournament play-in game Monday.

Leading 11-7 after the first quarter, the Bears (7-14) outscored the Blue Devils 13-3 in the second period and cruised from there.

Katie Tate scored 14 points to pace Bland County, which advances to play Fort Chiswell in tonight’s semifinals at Galax. Kellie Morris scored 13 points for Bland.

Catherine Vaughan led Grayson County with 11 points.

  • Galax wrestlers earn titles

Nine area wrestlers punched their tickets to the state tournament, including three region champions and four runners-up, during the Region C and Region IV tournaments this past weekend.

Galax’s Junior Espinoza, Dante Ravenell and Chaz Sizemore all won a region title, all doing so by the narrowest of margins, and Frankie Shalabi placed third at the Region C tournament at Radford High School.
