    EMORY –– Galax did what it had to do to move on to the next round. It very nearly made it so that move was a short one.

  • Galax survives PH ace but falls to Chilhowie in finals

     EMORY – When Chilhowie High School left fielder Ellen Vance settled under a pop fly off the bat of Galax’s Ally Bartlett and the ball plunked into her glove, it marked the final out and a first for her team. 

    Chilhowie claimed the biggest win in the history of the school’s softball program – and took home the first title trophy – on Wednesday with a 7-1 victory over Galax in the finals of the Mountain West Conference tournament at Patrick Henry High School. 

  • Cavs win big in softball, fall in baseball

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County scored 17 runs in the first two innings and went on to hammer William Fleming 21-0 in five innings Monday in the West Division of the Conference 24 softball quarterfinals.

    Carroll County (13-8) will host an East Division opponent in the conference semifinals Wednesday at 5 p.m.

  • Wyatt, Burris, Brumfield sign

    Three more Twin County athletes have made their college choices and have committed to continue their athletic careers as Grayson County’s Olivia Wyatt and Carroll County’s Seth Burris and Lindsey Brumfield signed with their respective schools recently.

    In Independence, Grayson County senior Olivia Wyatt signed with the Emory & Henry College cross country program.

  • Blue Devil boys win Conference 39

    BLUEFIELD –– Grayson County claimed the inaugural Conference 39 boys’ tennis championship Thursday, sweeping Galax 5-0 in the combined 1A/2A conference finals  at Bluefield City Park.

  • Carroll County turns it around on Patrick Henry

    HILLSVILLE –– Three weeks after suffering an 18-0 drubbing at Patrick Henry, Carroll County eked out a 3-2 win over the Patriots to close out its inaugural River Ridge District schedule Thursday at Bill Worrell Field.

    The Cavaliers (6-14 overall, 3-9 district) rode a complete-game effort by Kenley Meredith, who wriggled out of a seventh-inning jam to snap a seven-game slide against RRD competition.

  • Grayson jumps on Warriors in 8-5 win

    CHILHOWIE –– Grayson County opened with a bang and held on down the stretch to take an 8-5 win over Chilhowie in a nonconference game Monday afternoon.

    The Blue Devils (14-3) scored their first five batters of the game and jumped to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, taking the lead for good on a two-run single by Brady Cassell. Grace Circle added an RBI double, another run crossed on a fielder’s choice and Hayley Lawrence singled to knock in Circle. The sixth run came in on an error before the Warriors finally got out of the inning.

  • Carroll Co. star picks Queens

    HILLSVILLE –– As a freshman back in November of 2010, Connor Lundy stepped on to the basketball floor as a ninth-grader, playing his first varsity game for Carroll County. He made himself quite at home, knocking down seven 3-pointers and scoring 21 points.

    The next stage in his basketball career will have a taste of home as well.

  • Galax surprises Wythe for title

    Galax handed George Wythe just its second team loss of the season, winning the Conference 46 girls’ tennis championship with a 5-3 win Wednesday at Felts Park.

    The Maroon Tide took four of the six singles matches to head into doubles with the advantage. Paige Hanks disposed of Kayla Matheny 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Susan Davis rallied from a set down to get past Rebecah Storms 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
