  • Blue Devil boys clinch district

     NARROWS –– Grayson County opened up a 16-point lead by the end of the first quarter and breezed to a 71-34 win over Narrows in a Mountain Empire District game Tuesday.

    The Blue Devils (16-5 overall, 9-0 district) clinched the MED’s regular season championship with the victory.

    Ty Cannaday led three Grayson County scorers in double figures with 14 points. Max Rodgers scored 12 points and Mikey Rodgers added 10.

    Narrows (8-12, 0-8) got 14 points from Chandler Burton.

  • Carroll completes comeback

    HILLSVILLE –– It was understandable if Carroll County didn’t play its best basketball game of the year Tuesday night. After all, most of the Cavaliers had gotten in bed sometime after midnight the night before, having just completed a weeks-long climb back to the top of the Southwest District girls’ standings.

    Having entered the week at the No. 3 spot in the SWD, Carroll County is now the leader in the clubhouse after topping Richlands 37-35 Monday and Marion 50-38 on Tuesday.

  • Carroll lineman chooses Liberty

    HILLSVILLE –– Discussing the attributes of an offensive lineman is different than a conversation about those of any other position. Outside of physical size, a lot can be subjective. Runningbacks, quarterbacks and receivers have their yards and their touchdowns.  Linebackers and  defensive backs have their tackles and interceptions. Even defensive linemen can impress with their sack totals. 

    Offensive linemen have…grades?

    Lucas Holder has a number that should make an impression on anybody. That number is 1.

  • Grayson girls, Carroll boys lock up titles

    NARROWS –– Grayson County broke away from a tight game with an overpowering second half and clinched the Mountain Empire District girls’ regular season championship with a 53-36 win Wednesday over Narrows.

    The Blue Devils (17-4 overall, 8-1 district) led just 23-22 at halftime before outscoring the Green Wave 30-14 in the final two quarters of play.

    Camryn McGrady and Meredith Frost led Grayson County with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

    Narrows (4-15, 1-7) got a game-high 18 points from Tiffany Perdue.

  • Lady Blue Devils pick up pair of district victories

    BLAND –– Grayson County’s first point in the second quarter gave it enough for the win as the Blue Devil defense locked down on Bland County in a 47-16 Mountain Empire District win Wednesday at Bland High School.

    Grayson County limited the Bears to three points or fewer in each of the first three quarters, taking a 34-4 halftime lead.

  • Devil girls battle to keep No. 1

    Galax had a solid shot at throwing a wrench into the Mountain Empire District girls’ basketball race, but Grayson County ended the game on an 11-2 run, rallying for a 39-34 win in a back-and-forth affair Friday at Galax High School.

  • Carroll girls hand Tazewell first SWD loss

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County took a must-win game over Southwest District leader Tazewell Wednesday by holding the Bulldogs to 11 second-half points in the 45-38 victory.

    The Cavaliers (11-8 overall, 4-2 district) kept their district championship hopes alive by handing the Bulldogs (10-7, 4-1) their first SWD loss of the year.

    Taylor Martin scored 15 points and Crysta Guynn hit four 3-pointers and had 14 points for Carroll County, which pulled away from a 27-27 halftime deadlock.

    Nobody scored more than seven points for Tazewell.

  • Wythe pulls away from Galax

    WYTHEVILLE –– Baseball season is still a couple of months away, but Galax could use a closer right about now.

    For the second straight game the Maroon Tide found itself either tied or in the lead in the fourth quarter only to come up well short of its second win of the year, falling to George Wythe 60-49 in a nondistrict game Monday night.

  • Galax drops twin bill to Graham

    BLUEFIELD –– Graham took advantage of a cold shooting night by Galax and knocked the Maroon Tide girls out of a three-way tie for the Mountain Empire District lead with a 42-29 win Thursday night at Graham Middle School.

    The G-Girls (9-8 overall, 3-2 district) never trailed as Galax (10-7, 4-2) hit just a quarter of their field goal attempts.

    The Maroon Tide trailed 23-14 at halftime but Sydney Lindsey scored Galax’s first 10 points of the second half to pull the Tide to within 28-24.

  • Wrestlers in the homestretch

    INDEPENDENCE –– The four Mountain Empire District wrestling teams finished up the district portion of their regular season with a quad match Thursday at Grayson County, with Graham finishing with a 3-0 mark against Galax, Grayson and Fort Chiswell.

    Galax came away with a 2-1 team mark, Grayson was victorious over Fort, which went 0-3 on the night.
