  • Graham unseats Tide wrestlers in Mtn. Empire

BLUEFIELD –– Graham ended Galax’s run atop the Mountain Empire District wrestling scene last week, winning the district tournament in its first year after dropping down from the Group AA Southwest District.

Graham picked up seven individual championships and accumulated 197 team points to earn the team title. Galax claimed six weight classes and earned 165 points to finish in the runner-up position. Grayson County was third with one champion and 100 points and Fort Chiswell placed fourth with 28 points.

  • Maroon Tide ends drought

The last time Galax won the Mountain Empire District girls’ basketball championship, the ladies played hoops in the fall, the MED schedule included games against Pocahontas, Mount Rogers and Rocky Gap, and the senior players on this year’s team took naps during the school day.

This year’s title team has had the district in a sleeper hold all season.

Deion George scored 10 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as Galax rolled over Bland County 59-28 in a Mountain Empire District boys’ basketball game Tuesday in Galax.

  • Cavaliers knock off Floyd

HILLSVILLE –– Wrapping up a 17-win season is never a bad thing. It’s just a little sweeter when the list of senior night honorees is all of two names long.

Following the abbreviated senior intro, Carroll County capped its regular season by pulling away from Floyd County 65-50 in a nondistrict game Friday night.

  • Loss to Oak Hill is one Tide players won’t soon forget

They lost big. We should probably get that out of the way first. Any hopes of some sort of miracle upset disappeared sometime in the second quarter amid a flurry of dunks and fast breaks.

Still, the Galax players were unanimous: This was a night they’ll never forget - for all the right reasons.

INDEPENDENCE –– Allison White and Taylor Bryant poured in 28 first-half points as Galax raced out to a huge early lead and handled Grayson County 65-36 in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Friday.

  • Cavaliers lock up Southwest titles

RICHLANDS –– Carroll County swept a boys’-girls’ double-header Saturday at Richlands, locking up the regular season Southwest District championship for both teams.

The Cavalier boys faced a much-improved Blue Tornado compared to the Richlands team it whipped by 52 points in December, earning a 59-54 win. Carroll wrapped up the season title, its first since 2006, by improving to 15-2 overall, 7-0 in the district. The two teams were even for three-fourths of the game, with a big third quarter the difference for the Cavaliers.

  • Lindsey leads Tide sweep of Graham

Sydney Lindsey picked up the slack left by the absence of Galax’s leading scored and led the Maroon Tide to a 43-38 win over Graham in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Friday.

The Maroon Tide was playing without Bailey Shumate, who was injured in practice a day after topping 1,000 points for her career. Lindsey, a freshman, responded with 17 points in her first varsity start.

Galax trailed 22-21 at halftime but held the G-girls to 14 points in the second half.

  • Carroll sweeps SWD quad from Bulldogs

TAZEWELL –– Carroll County jumped out to an 8-0 lead and stayed perfect in Southwest District girls’ play with a 45-33 win Tuesday over Tazewell.
