  • Tide posts solid results at Charlotte

     CHARLOTTE –– Galax enjoyed one of its best-ever visits to the Wendy’s Classic on Oct. 2, earning just its second top-15 individual finish by the boys’ team as well as its highest team finish ever by the girls.

    The Maroon Tide placed 16th out of 28 girls’ teams, led by top-100 finishes by Megan Boyles (57th, 21 minutes, 23 seconds), Lindsey Ayers (92nd, 22:25) and Marleigh Durham (93rd, 22:26) in a field of 196 runners.

  • Carroll County shuts down Abingdon 28-3

     HILLSVILLE –– Blake Bowman accounted for 313 all-purpose yards and Carroll County’s defense kept Abingdon out of the end zone for the first time this year as the Cavaliers claimed a 28-3 win in a Southwest District game Friday at Tommy Thompson Field.

    A senior quarterback, Bowman rushed 15 times for 120 yards, completed two passes for 40 yards and totaled 153 yards in punt returns as the Cavaliers improved to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in the district with the win.

  • Maroon Tide hangs on

     Galax opened a 20-0 lead, weathered a Grayson County rally and finally held on for one of the biggest wins this program has seen in many a year, earning a 23-14 victory over the archrival Blue Devils in a key Mountain Empire District game Friday.

    “They made plays,” Galax coach Mark Dixon said. “The thing is they keep coming back. Grayson made a run at us there and we came back. We responded. I couldn’t be any prouder of them, because I know how good a football team Grayson County is.”

  • Key stretch opens for Carroll

     HILLSVILLE –– One benefit of having an open week is the opportunity for coaches to scout the next opponent in person. Carroll County coach Tom Hale was hoping to see something other than what he witnessed in Abingdon’s rout of John Battle this past Friday, but the trip to Washington County only served as a confirmation.

    “We saw them Friday night and they just reinforced what we already knew,” said Hale after the Falcons’ 49-13 win.

  • More than bragging rights at stake

     Grayson County vs. Galax has always meant a lot. This year, it’s worth a lot.

    The Blue Devils hop the New River and head into Galax for a Mountain Empire District game tonight that, for the first time in a long time, will have serious district championship and postseason implications for both teams.

    While it may sound like a sound bite from a meeting of the Mutual Admiration Society, both coaches voiced some very real concerns about the other’s program this week.

  • Volleyball teams pick up wins

     Galax used a late flurry in the second set to take a three-set win over Rural Retreat, notching a 25-14, 25-20, 25-8 nondistrict win Wednesday night.

    Having breezed to the win in the first game, Galax (13-1) found itself in a battle in the second as the Indians pulled out to a 17-13 lead.

    A Rural Retreat serve into the net and a Harley Brewer kill ignited the Maroon Tide, which finished the set on a 12-3 run to take a two-game lead.

    Three powerful kills by Kem Simmons and two more spikes by Bailey Shumate helped the Maroon Tide pull in front.

  • Smith, Loftin take River Run wins

     FRIES –– Carley Smith and Kevin Loftin were the individual winners while Galax swept the team competitions at the Grayson County River Run cross country meet, held Wednesday.

    Smith built a one-minute, 24-second lead over the field by the completion of the 5K run, finishing with a time of 20:28. Megan Boyles of Galax was second in 21:52 and Elise Zyvlosky of Carroll County took third in 22:41.

  • Hanks, Galax claim MED golf championships

     DRAPER –– Galax had three scores in the 70s and breezed to the Mountain Empire District golf championship, shooting a composite 311 Wednesday at Draper Valley Golf Club.

    The Maroon Tide and Grayson County will advance as teams to Tuesday’s Region C tournament, set for Wytheville Country Club.

    Galax’s Eddie Hanks and John Bryant finished regulation tied atop the leaderboard, each with a 2-over-par 76, and Hanks took the individual championship on the second playoff hole.

  • Open week a welcome sight

     Though the circumstances couldn’t be much worse, the timing couldn’t be better for an open week to roll in for Galax and Carroll County.

    Normally a time to heal bumps and bruises and to get a jump on preparations for the following week, the Maroon Tide and the Cavaliers are dealing with some serious personnel issues as they both take tonight off.

  • Maroon Tide runners fare well at Bristol

     BRISTOL, Tenn. –– Galax placed fourth in the girls’ team standings and fifth in the boys’ results at the Bristol Cross, held Saturday at Steele Creek Park.

    The Maroon Tide placed all seven of its girls' runners among the top 60 scoring places in the field of 93 runners, with the top five counting toward the team score.
