  • Cockerham, Jordan lead way

HILLSVILLE –– With two new teams competing in the Mountain Empire District cross country championships this year, it would be understandable for those less familiar with it to become confused by the Southwest Virginia Training Center course.

All they had to do was follow the Cockerham kid.

You kind of knew it was going to happen.

Weeks ago, especially after the night of Sept. 16, you just knew, because this season had that feel about it. You knew deep down inside that Grayson County and Galax would make it to their meeting with one another this Friday, both sporting 9-0 records, even if it took a miracle along the way.

Galax scored 14 points before ever taking an offensive snap, and returned three kicks for touchdowns on a soggy night alongside I-77, rolling over Bland County 49-0 in a Mountain Empire District game Friday night.
