  • Cavs perfect heading into regionals

     HILLSVILLE –– For the second time in three years, Carroll County entered regional tournament play undefeated as the Cavaliers took down Richlands for the Southwest District tournament championship Thursday at CCHS.

    After winning a sloppy first game and seeing Richlands take the second game, the Cavaliers (22-0) regrouped and coasted the rest of the way for a 25-22, 25-27, 25-14, 25-15 win.

  • Galax returns to postseason

     Getting into the playoffs is a pretty cool deal, especially when getting there means ending an eight-year dry spell between postseason appearances. It’s cool to Galax coach Mark Dixon for a different reason. It means progress is being made.

  • UPDATE – Region playoff pairings set

    VOLLEYBALL

    Region C

    Galax earned a first-round bye and will open Region C Division 1 volleyball tournament action Wednesday.

    The Mountain Empire District regular season and tournament champion Maroon Tide will play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Eastern Montgomery H.S. against the winner of Monday's Craig County-Narrows first-round match. The championship is scheduled for Thursday at 7 at EastMont.

  • Cavaliers maul Graham 60-21

     HILLSVILLE –– Just seven days after allowing a school-record 63 points in a shutout loss at Richlands, Carroll County turned the tables and scored the most points ever by a Cavalier football team, thoroughly dismantling Graham 60-21 in the regular season finale for both teams Friday at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Southwest swan song for Graham

     HILLSVILLE –– Let the history books show that one of the charter members of the Southwest District played its final league contest in Hillsville on Nov. 5, 2010.

    Graham, an official member of the SWD since its creation in the 50s and since the 30s a part of the group that would become the SWD, will play its last regular season contest as a Group AA school tonight when the G-Men visit Carroll County for a 7:30 kickoff at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Playoff time for Grayson

     INDEPENDENCE –– Talk all you wish about Grayson County’s chances of reaching the Region C Division 2 playoffs, about which teams must win and which teams must lose to give the Blue Devils the points they need to extend their season.

    The fact is that the playoffs started for the Blue Devils the night of Oct. 8.

  • Final tune-up for Maroon Tide

     Week 11 of the high school football season will be far from a ho-hum night in Southwest Virginia, but there will be almost no big-picture drama on the final night of the regular season in Region C, Division 1.

    With all six playoff spots already locked up, the only thing left is dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s. That, and working out little details such as who plays whom in the first round next week.

  • Grayson drills Green Wave

     NARROWS –– Grayson County fell behind early but roared back with 48 unanswered points and rolled over Narrows 54-14 in a Mountain Empire District game Friday at Ragsdale Field.

    Following a 7-yard Tyler Conley run for the Green Wave (2-7 overall, 1-2 MED), Grayson County used three Xavier Rodriguez scoring runs to jump out to a 20-6 lead. Rodriguez scored on carries of 4, 41 and 8 yards for Grayson, which added an 11-yard Eric Harvey touchdown catch and a 45-yard interception for a score by Zack Vaughan to take a 35-6 lead into the half.

  • Maroon Tide keeps on rolling

     Galax left no doubt who the better team was Friday night en route to a 32-7 thrashing of Bland County.

    Galax (6-3 overall, 2-1 MED) scored early and effortlessly against a defense allowing an average of 28 points per game. On its first possession, the Maroon Tide took possession on its own 33-yard line. Senior quarterback Terrance Mazon wasted no time airing the ball out, finding his number one target Deion George three times for 74 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown with 5:11 left in the first quarter.

  • Maroon Tide hosts Bland County

      It seems pretty simple on the outside. Plug a kid into the runningback spot and presto, instant 100-yard rusher.

    Jordan Vaughan made a habit of topping 100 yards until being felled by a foot injury in Galax’s fifth game of the season. Enter Jacob Fisher, who had no carries before he rushed for 159 yards against Grayson County in his first outing as Vaughan’s replacement.

    Fisher injured a hand Friday at Covington, giving way to freshman Steven Peoples, who responded with 109 yards in his first true backfield action of the year.
