  • Grayson County girls win 10th

    INDEPENDENCE –– Galax coach Yerrick Stoneman surmised that had his club hit a few more shots, he might have gotten Grayson County coach Tiny Funk a little worried.

    Funk didn’t need any help.

    “You know how rivalry games are,” Funk said after his Blue Devils pulled away from the Maroon Tide for a 47-30 Mountain Empire District win Friday. “Yerrick had his kids prepared and they did a good job defensively.”

  • Devils reach GNB finals; Conley scorches Celtics

    Grayson County outscored Marion 26-16 after halftime and reached the championship game of the Grayson National Bank Classic, pulling away from the Scarlet Hurricane for a 46-37 girls’ basketball win Monday night at Galax High School.

    The Blue Devils, who reached the finals for the second year in a row, faced Mount Airy, N.C. Tuesday for the tournament title.

  • Galax girls down Alleghany, Cavs third at Fort

    SPARTA, N.C. –– Alleghany got 29 points from Austin Sprinkle and upended Galax 62-57 in a nondistrict boys’ basketball game Friday night.

    Fabian Santos scored 16 and Avery Hash added 10 for the Trojans, who opened the game on a 10-0 run.

    Galax sent two wrestlers to the championship finals and earned a seventh-place team finish at the Agie Skeens Memorial wrestling tournament last weekend at Grundy.

  • Slow start dooms Devils at Harmon

    FLOYD –– The good news is that Grayson County held Glenvar scoring machine Jeremy Williams to below his scoring average. The bad news is that Williams still scored in bunches.

    The Glenvar guard dropped in 25 points, two shy of his average, and had five breakaway dunks as the Highlanders ran away from the Blue Devils 57-33 Saturday at the Chance Harmon Memorial Classic at Floyd County High School.

  • Galax hosts Grayson National event as holiday tournaments commence

    The Galax High School girls’ basketball program will host its second annual Grayson National Bank Holiday Classic, a three-day varsity-JV combo event starting scheduled for Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.

    The tournament will be made up of both a varsity and a JV bracket consisting of Galax, Grayson County, Christiansburg, Pulaski County, Patrick Henry, Marion, Mount Airy, N.C. and Forbush, N.C.

  • Tide girls win first; Cavs split

    CHRISTIANSBURG –– Galax got off the schneid after an 0-4 start, blowing away Christiansburg in the fourth quarter to take a 50-29 win in a nondistrict girls’ game Monday night.

    After the Maroon Tide jumped to an 11-3 lead in the first quarter, the two teams played evenly through the second and third until Galax smoked the Blue Demons 21-8 over the final eight minutes.

  • Carroll girls roll to fourth straight

    It took more than three minutes of playing time before Carroll County finally removed the zero from its side of the scoreboard. A little more than seven minutes later, the Cavaliers were sitting atop a 17-point cushion.

    A run of 19 unanswered points proved to be insurmountable as Carroll County’s girls won their fourth straight game, this one a 60-30 nondistrict decision Friday over Galax.

  • Maroon Tide squanders huge lead but drops Wythe by 9

     Galax jumped out to a 31-14 halftime lead and withstood a second-half surge by George Wythe, holding on for a 65-56 win in a nondistrict boys’ basketball game Monday in Galax.

    Tied 8-8 with three minutes left in the first period, the Maroon Tide (3-0) outscored the Maroons 23-7 the rest of the first half to take command.
