  • Maroon Tide bashes Indians in region opener

     Galax rumbled into the second round of the Region C Division 1 playoffs Friday night with a 55-21 thrashing of Rural Retreat.

    The Maroon Tide (8-3) scored early and often, putting a touchdown on the board on its first five possessions.

    After holding the Indians (4-7) to a three-and-out on the opening possession, Galax took over on the Indian 33-yard line. Junior Jacob Fisher handled the running duties on the opening possession, carrying the ball three straight times for a quick touchdown, giving the Tide a 6-0 lead with 9:35 left in the first quarter.

  • Maroon Tide falls in title match

     ELLISTON –– Getting anywhere worth being is a process of many steps. Though coming up short to Bath County in a bid for its first region volleyball championship, Galax took another step Thursday.

    The Maroon Tide battled back from a 2-1 deficit but couldn’t complete the comeback a second night in a row and fell to the Chargers 22-25, 25-14, 25-15, 23-25, 15-9 in the Region C Division 1 championship at Eastern Montgomery High School.

  • Wythe holds off Devils 21-14

     WYTHEVILLE ­ -- Grayson County battled George Wythe to the end last Friday night before losing the opening game of the Region C Division 2 playoffs, 21-14 at Pendleton Field.

    It was the first time the Blue Devils had advanced to the playoffs since 2007 and ironically it was against George Wythe.

    The Blue Devils fought from behind twice to tie the game at 7 and 14.

    The Maroons (7-3) got on the scoreboard on their opening drive.

  • Cavs get another shot at Bassett

     HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County gets a do-over.

    Having just suffered a last-second, 17-14 loss to Bassett to open the 2010 season back in August, a common sentiment along the Cavaliers’ sideline was, boy, I’d like to have another chance at that one.

    Carroll County will get that opportunity tonight (Friday) when the Cavaliers and Bengals open Region IV Division 4 playoff action at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Devils enter wide-open D2 playoffs

    INDEPENDENCE –– If the Region C Division 2 football playoffs are as interesting as the regular season, the next three weeks should be a lot of fun.

    Just how tight was the RCD2 field this year? Consider the following:

    *Grayson County was stuck in ninth place with two weeks left in the season, needed to defeat an 8-1 team and get outside help just to crack the top six, and wound up as the No. 5 seed.

    *One extra win by any of the six teams the Blue Devils defeated and Grayson would be hosting a first-round game.

  • Mazon, Brown lead Tide to 41-0 win

     NARROWS –– Galax used a big second quarter to jump out to a 27-0 halftime lead and locked up the No. 3 seed in the Region C Division 1 playoffs Friday with a 41-0 defeat of Narrows at Ragsdale Field.

    The Maroon Tide improved to 7-3 overall, 3-1 in the Mountain Empire District and earned a share of the MED championship thanks to Grayson County’s upset win over Fort Chiswell.

    Terrance Mazon slung three touchdown passes on the night, all three coming in a 20-point second-quarter explosion.

  • Maroon Tide cruises to MED championship

     With the VHSL splitting volleyball championships into division beginning this year, Galax has had its eye on the school’s first state tournament berth for quite a while.

    The Mountain Empire District tournament only served as a means for the Maroon Tide to pick up steam.

    Galax entered the Region C Division 1 tournament as the No. 1 seed after breezing to the MED tournament championship with a pair of wins Saturday at GHS.

  • Cavs perfect heading into regionals

     HILLSVILLE –– For the second time in three years, Carroll County entered regional tournament play undefeated as the Cavaliers took down Richlands for the Southwest District tournament championship Thursday at CCHS.

    After winning a sloppy first game and seeing Richlands take the second game, the Cavaliers (22-0) regrouped and coasted the rest of the way for a 25-22, 25-27, 25-14, 25-15 win.

     Getting into the playoffs is a pretty cool deal, especially when getting there means ending an eight-year dry spell between postseason appearances. It’s cool to Galax coach Mark Dixon for a different reason. It means progress is being made.

  • UPDATE – Region playoff pairings set

    VOLLEYBALL

    Region C

    Galax earned a first-round bye and will open Region C Division 1 volleyball tournament action Wednesday.

    The Mountain Empire District regular season and tournament champion Maroon Tide will play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Eastern Montgomery H.S. against the winner of Monday's Craig County-Narrows first-round match. The championship is scheduled for Thursday at 7 at EastMont.
