  • Tide, Devils fill all-MED spots

     Grayson County and Galax, along with Fort Chiswell, each claimed a share of the Mountain Empire District football championship. The Blue Devils and the Maroon Tide accepted their share of the postseason accolades, as well.

    The two teams combined to fill 11 first-team and 17 second-team slots on the all-Mountain Empire District football team, as voted on by the district’s coaches.

  • Cavs earn postseason honors

     Carroll County’s Maleah Neely was named to the all-Region IV first team for volleyball while the Cavaliers had two first-team and eight second-team picks in all-Southwest District football balloting.

    Neely, a senior outside hitter and the Southwest District player of the year, led the Cavaliers to a 22-1 record with team highs of 295 serving points, 231 kills, 359 assists, 42 aces and 226 digs, and was third on the team with 34 blocks.

  • Abingdon uses late rally to hand Carroll first loss, 70-58

     HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County trailed Abingdon by a single point with less than four minutes to go Friday before the Falcons exploded down the stretch, pulling away for a 70-58 win in the Southwest District opener for both schools.

    Up 54-53, Abingdon used a Zach Viers 3-pointer with 3:34 remaining to ignite an 11-0 run over the next three minutes. Alex Looney had six points during the spurt, including a three-point play.

  • Lundy’s hot hand lifts Cavaliers in season opener

     HILLSVILLE –– Welcome to the varsity, Mr. Lundy.

    Freshman Conner Lundy knocked down seven 3-pointers in his first varsity game Wednesday, leading Carroll County to a 67-49 win over Patrick County in the season opener for both teams.

    Lundy finished with 21 points for the Cavaliers, who got a game-high 24 points from sophomore Ryan Gravley. Wes Smoot tossed in 11.

  • Neely named best in Southwest

     HILLSVILLE –– If Maleah Neely couldn’t do it, it probably didn’t need doing.

    A Jill-of-all-trades for the Carroll County volleyball team, Neely was an easy choice for the Southwest District’s player of the year award, handed down following the conclusion of the 2010 season recently.

    She headlines a first team that includes three Cavaliers among the top six players in the league.

  • Tide rakes in MED awards

     The Galax volleyball team wrapped up a dominant run through the Mountain Empire District by dominating the all-district voting as nine Maroon Tide players and their coach were named on the three teams, including four on the all-MED first team.

    Galax finished the season with a 22-4 record, the most wins ever for the Maroon Tide, and advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history after a runner-up finish in the Region C Division 1 tournament.

  • Second second chance for Carroll County

     HILLSVILLE –– The second time around went pretty well, the first time around.

    Having avenged a regular season loss in the first round of the postseason, Carroll County (8-3) will dry to duplicate the feat tonight when the Cavaliers travel to Christiansburg (10-0) for a Region IV Division 4 semifinal game at Porterfield Stadium.

  • Galax boys, girls seventh in finale

     THE PLAINS –– Top-10 finishes for a pair of individuals and seventh-place showings for both Galax’s teams punctuated a year full of highlights for Twin County cross country runners as the season drew to a close with the VHSL championships at the Great Meadow course near Manassas on Nov. 13.

  • XC teams post strong finishes

     PEARISBURG –– Galax advanced both its girls’ and boys’ teams to the state meet and the Maroon Tide’s Travis Cockerham missed by a whisker winning the boys’ individual championship, finishing a close second to Glenvar’s James Kasper at the Region C cross country championships in Pearisburg.

    Cockerham, a junior, led throughout most of the 3-mile course until Kasper made a late charge, nipping the Maroon Tide runner at the finish despite Cockerham’s diving lunge at the line.
