  • Rutherford tops 1,000 points in Grayson victory

    FLOYD –– Tyler Rutherford didn’t get all 1,000 of his career points Saturday night. It only seemed that way.

    Rutherford exploded for 40 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career Saturday as Grayson County drilled Floyd County 90-70 in the final game of the Chance Crawford Invitational at Floyd County High School.

    Rutherford, a senior guard, drained seven 3-pointers for the Blue Devils, who had fallen 113-108 to the Buffaloes in the two teams’ first meeting in December.

  • Devils take back-and-forth win

     INDEPENDENCE –– Having seen his team give up a dozen straight points in the second quarter, Grayson County coach Lucas Austin called a timeout and asked his players if they had already quit.

    Turns out that the Blue Devils were just about to get started.

    Playing at home for the first time since before Christmas, Grayson County rallied from 15 points down into a six-point lead by the end of the third quarter Monday and held on down the stretch to eke out a 68-65 nondistrict win over Carroll County.

  • Devils run past Narrows

     NARROWS –– Taking a win at the cozy confines of William Patteson Gymnasium is never an easy task. Even when that win includes a 26-point lead at some time.

    Playing for just the second time in three weeks, Grayson County found itself in a battle for the better part of three quarters before pulling away to a 79-58 victory over Narrows in a Mountain Empire District game Friday night.

  • Change in the air for new year

     Good news-bad news time.

    The good news is that the top of the line composite bat you’ve been coveting for the upcoming baseball season can probably be found at a fraction of its original cost.

    The bad news is that using it anywhere but in the batting cage can result in a two-game suspension.

    The Virginia High School League has thrown the state’s baseball teams a curveball by banning almost all composite bats for the upcoming season in an effort to curb a trend toward more and more potent – and dangerous – bats.

  • Cavs turn Blues inside-out

     HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County is sound fundamentally and always has a shooter or three lurking on the outside, two things that keep the Cavaliers competitive night-in and night-out. The emergence of an inside presence has made Carroll dangerous.

    Richlands learned that first-hand on Saturday.

    The penetration and outside shooting of Lindsey Martin coupled with the domination by Shyann Dalton in the paint proved a combination too much for Richlands to handle as the Cavaliers claimed a key 54-39 win in a Southwest District game.

  • Maroon Tide sweeps Warriors

     The failed alley-oop attempt from Justin Hash to Lawrence Parsons resulted in a quick exit for both players and a short but to-the-point sermon taken from the Book of Verl.

    Far be it from the two Galax players to do any backsliding.

    Upon re-entering the game, Parsons cruised along the baseline when he received a more conventional bounce pass from Hash, took one dribble and rattled the rafters with a two-handed flush, completing a three-point play to highlight a 75-44 trouncing of Chilhowie in a nondistrict game Tuesday night.

  • Maroon Tide boys topple Graham, Galax girls knock off Bland County

    Galax used double-digit advantages in the first and fourth quarters to roll to a  49-33 Mountain Empire District girls’ win over Bland County Friday in Galax.

    The Maroon Tide (8-6 overall, 2-0 district) outscored the Bears a combined 35-15 in the two periods to remain unbeaten in MED play.

  • McKinney’s 21 leads Tide boys

     Galax jumped out to a huge first-quarter lead and opened Mountain Empire District play Friday with a 78-43 win over Narrows.

    The Maroon Tide (8-1 overall, 1-0 district) never trailed after holding the Green Wave (5-5, 0-1) to eight first-quarter points.

    Galax led 6-5 when it embarked on a 23-3 run over a stretch of nine minutes spanning the first and second quarters. Brock Cox drained a 3-pointer and Devonte McKinney hit a layup and free throw to ignite a run of 14 straight Maroon Tide points as Galax took a 23-8 lead into the second period.

  • Rodgers, Devils edge Cavs

     HILLSVILLE –– It was basketball’s version of a dive play on fourth-and-goal at the 1.

    Grayson County’s Mikey Rodgers took an inbounds pass at midcourt with 3.8 seconds left and barged through the Carroll County defense, rolling in a layup at the buzzer to lift the Blue Devils to a 70-68 win in a nondistrict boys’ game Wednesday night.

  • Grayson County girls barely miss chance at first victory

     INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County came within a whisker of snapping a 42-game losing streak but fell to Holston 39-37 in a nondistrict girls’ basketball game Wednesday.

    Holston (4-5), which had ended its own string of 100-plus straight defeats earlier in the year, took a two-point lead on Faith Ritchie’s free throw with 18 seconds remaining.

    Grayson County (0-7) had a chance to send the game into overtime but was off the mark at the buzzer.
