  • Tide stays atop MED wrestling

    A district wrestling tournament can be an ultra-competitive, multi-day grapple-palooza or it can be a cozy affair consuming less time than many dual matches.

    The end result is the same, though; district champions are crowned.

    Galax won seven weight classes and Grayson County picked up four individual titles at the Mountain Empire District tournament Thursday at Galax Middle School.

  • Cavaliers 1-for-5 in SWD finals

     GRUNDY –– Carroll County sent five wrestlers to the championship round but came away with just one individual title Saturday in the Southwest District wrestling tournament at Riverview Elementary School.

  • Carroll County girls clinch Southwest title

    TAZEWELL –– Carroll County secured the Southwest District girls’ basketball championship Saturday, running past Tazewell 56-33.

    The Cavaliers improved to 10-0 in the district, 14-4 overall, and earned the right to host the SWD tournament.

    Carroll County again got the job done defensively, holding an opponent to 38 points or fewer for the sixth time in the past seven games. The Cavaliers have limited opponents to single-digit scoring in a quarter nine times in the past 12 quarters.

  • Cavs stifle Falcons; Wave downs Tide

     HILLSVILLE –– After falling behind early, Carroll County clamped down defensively and dropped Abingdon 62-38 in a Southwest District girls’ game Wednesday.

    The Cavaliers (13-4 overall, 9-0 district) faced a 20-13 deficit at the start of the second quarter but gave up just 18 points the rest of the night – 10 in the second half – to strengthen their hold on the SWD lead.

    Lindsay Martin scored 21 points and Maleah Neely had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Carroll County. Shyann Dalton added 11 points.

  • Grundy stuns Cavaliers in 2 OT

     HILLSVILLE ––Grundy overcame a 10-point second-half deficit and held on to knock off Carroll County 78-77 in two overtimes Saturday in a Southwest District game.

    The Cavaliers dropped to 10-7 overall with the loss, 6-3 in the district, with two of the three losses coming to the last-place Golden Wave (4-13, 2-6).

    Cody Justus led all scorers with 27 points for Grundy, which trailed by eight with less than five minutes to play in regulation. Ben Rife and Travis Lester added 18 and 17, respectively.

  • Dominant first half lifts Maroon Tide girls to easy win

     INDEPENDENCE –– After falling behind in the opening seconds, Galax scored 31 unanswered points and coasted to a 45-18 win over Grayson County in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Monday night.

    Lucy Phipps gave Grayson County (0-12 overall, 0-5 MED) its only lead of the night 34 seconds into the game before the Maroon Tide (9-7, 4-0) tossed a shutout the rest of the half. Bailey Shumate shot Galax into the lead with a transition basket and a pair of 3-pointers as the Tide zoomed into a 12-2 lead by the end of the first.

  • Tide rebounds with key MED win

     MAX MEADOWS –– Justin Hash’s 3-pointer with 1:10 to play put Galax in front 64-62 and the Maroon Tide took a critical Mountain Empire District win Thursday night, edging Fort Chiswell 66-62.

    In a week that opened with three teams undefeated in the MED and riding winning streaks of six games apiece, Galax lost a one-point decision to Grayson County on Tuesday but bounced back to deal the Pioneers their first MED loss of the year two nights later.

  • Cavaliers finish strong at Christiansburg tourney

     CHRISTIANSBURG –– Blake Bowman and Jordan Lamb each advanced to the championship finals and Carroll County posted a strong finish as a team at the Big Blue Invitational wrestling tournament, hosted by Christiansburg Friday and Saturday.

    The match of the day came in the 135-pound championship bout, as Bowman beat Logan Bosley of Christiansburg in a violent battle by a 6-5 decision. It is Bowman’s second career title in this event, as he won in 2009 at 130.

  • Galax takes early lead for Wachovia Cup

     CHARLOTTESVILLE –– Galax, Western Albemarle and Cosby lead the Virginia High School League’s Wachovia Cup standings in Group A, AA and AAA following the 2010 fall sports season.

    The Wachovia Cup recognizes the League’s state champions of state champions, the school in each group that performs best in state-level competition across all sports.

  • Rutherford tops 1,000 points in Grayson victory

    FLOYD –– Tyler Rutherford didn’t get all 1,000 of his career points Saturday night. It only seemed that way.

    Rutherford exploded for 40 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career Saturday as Grayson County drilled Floyd County 90-70 in the final game of the Chance Crawford Invitational at Floyd County High School.

    Rutherford, a senior guard, drained seven 3-pointers for the Blue Devils, who had fallen 113-108 to the Buffaloes in the two teams’ first meeting in December.
