  • Carroll Co. ousts Grundy

     HILLSVILLE –– It’s been proven this year that there’s no shame in having played a close baseball game with Grundy. Even a loss to the one-time Southwest District doormat isn’t nearly as surprising as it once was.

    Carroll County did neither.

    Facing a team that handed league-leading Tazewell its first SWD loss of the season just a week earlier, the Cavaliers jumped on the Golden Wave early and advanced to the SWD tournament semifinals with a 12-4 win Monday at Bill Worrell Field.

  • Maroon Tide repeats as MED track champions

     Galax swept the team titles at the Mountain Empire District track and field championships Wednesday, repeating the performance from a year ago and marking the 24th time the school has won district track championships since joining the MED.

    The Maroon Tide girls earned their ninth title by holding off Narrows 152-143 while the boys easily outpointed Grayson County 163-108 for their 15th district championship. Fort Chiswell’s boys were third with 86 points, followed by Bland County (35) and Narrows (30).

  • Strong homers lift Richlands

    HILLSVILLE –– A predictable offense isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, repetitiveness was a key Thursday for Richlands.

    Every nine batters, the kid wearing No. 13 hit one over the fence.

    Led by Bradley Strong’s three solo home runs and a solid effort by starting pitcher James Patton, Richlands knocked off Carroll County 6-2 in a Southwest District game at Bill Worrell Field.

  • Grayson back on top in MED

     NARROWS –– Three Grayson County pitchers limited Narrows to a pair of hits Monday and the Blue Devils wrapped up the Mountain Empire District regular season championship with a 10-0 win shortened to six innings.

    Jared Salts improved to 8-0 on the mound, giving up two singles in four innings. The senior right-hander struck out four and walked two. Dustin Leonard and Tyler Rutherford each pitched one hitless inning.

  • Cavaliers hold on for 3-3 tie with Marion

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County took an early two-goal lead over Marion but had to settle for a draw after a 3-3 deadlock in a Southwest District girls’ match Monday at Tommy Thompson Field.

    Each team scored in the first two minutes of the second half as Carroll County (2-6-1 district) took a 3-2 lead into the waning minutes, but an iffy call in the Cavalier box resulted in a tying penalty kick for the Scarlet Hurricane.

  • Grayson boys’ and girls’ tennis teams perfect

     NARROWS –– Grayson County will ride an abbreviated win to what it hopes is an extended run in the postseason.

    The Blue Devil boys’ tennis team capped a perfect regular season with a 7-0 win over Narrows on Thursday and will enter postseason play with a 14-0 overall record.

    Playing eight-game pro sets, the Blue Devils swept the singles matches, including a 9-8 (7-3) win by No. 6 Tyler Farris over Allen Oney.

  • Maroon Tide girls claim 10th win

     MAX MEADOWS –– Galax improved to 10-2-1 on the year with a 5-0 shutout win over Fort Chiswell in a MED girls’ soccer match Tuesday.

    Mirieda Martinez scored twice from outside the box to lead Galax.  Chantasy Cottrell converted a Sonia Solis assist for a goal, Alexandra Moreno set up Jessica Salinas for a goal and Kelsey Williams scored unassisted for the Maroon Tide.

    Abbi Ponce had the shutout in goal for Galax.

  • Grayson one win away after topping Fort 10-0

     INDEPENDENCE ––  Dylan Isom highlighted a five-run fourth inning with a two-run single as the Blue Devils clinched at least a tie for the MED title Wednesday with a 10-0, five-inning win over Fort Chiswell.

    Grayson County needs to win against either Galax today or Narrows next week to seal the season championship.

    Tyler Rutherford and Dustin Leonard each went 3-for-3 at the plate with Rutherford scoring three runs and Leonard driving in two.

  • Kimble, Cavs silence Devils

    HILLSVILLE –– Having paused for what may have been the shortest senior day observance in the history of such procedures, Carroll County made it a short afternoon with an 8-0 nondistrict softball win over Grayson County.

    After the introduction of lone 12th-grader Lindsey Davidson followed by an impromptu fly-over by a gaggle of wayward geese, junior-heavy Carroll County upped its record to 13-3 Monday on the strength of a five-run fifth inning and a tidy two-hitter by pitcher Lillie Kimble.

  • Walk-off HR lifts Fort over Galax 17-16

     MAX MEADOWS –– Having combined for 24 runs on 19 hits in just three innings, things seemingly got back to normal when Galax and Fort Chiswell totaled just one run over the next three frames.

    Turns out that the two teams were just saving up for the big finish.

    Alex Larrowe’s grand slam gave the Maroon Tide a 16-13 lead in the top of the seventh but the Pioneers hit for the cycle in the bottom half, including Josh Underwood’s two-run walk-off homer as Fort Chiswell took a wild 17-16 win over Galax in an MED slugfest Friday afternoon.
