Galax’s late-game offensive fireworks weren’t enough to overcome its early-game defensive implosion.

In a key early game between Mountain Empire District title hopefuls, the Maroon Tide committed seven errors in the first two innings, fell behind Fort Chiswell by nine runs in the fifth inning and rallied back to within reach before taking an 11-8 loss Tuesday at Felts Park.

There seems to be a pattern forming here.

With Galax and Chilhowie having played one another in baseball for the past four years, Thursday marked the third time in the series that the winning run scored on a bases-loaded hit batsman.

This time the painful RBI came in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Warriors rallied for a wild 11-10 win over the Maroon Tide in a nondistrict game at Felts Park.

Galax had two short-range goals answered by a pair of full-field comebacks by Carroll County as the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in a nondistrict match Friday evening.

The Maroon Tide may have gotten the better end of the deal statistically, outshooting the Cavaliers 22-8 and attempting 12 corner kicks to Carroll’s two, but Galax wasn’t able to translate the advantages into a game-winning goal.

 TAZEWELL –– Grayson County missed an opportunity to take a win from what may prove to be the strongest team in Southwest Virginia Thursday night, dropping a double header at Tazewell, 2-0 and 7-6.

A walk and a Blake Hash single put two Bulldogs on base in the second inning and both eventually scored, one on a throwing error and one on a double steal, for the only runs in the first game.
